About this deal

Consistently rated not just as one of the greatest jazz albums but as one of THE greatest musical statements of the 20th century, its 46 minutes of improvisation and sophistication remain peerless. Hi – some of those high matrix codes are found both with and without CBS overprint -1BB/1BG: one CBS to five without, BG/BJ one CBS one without, so I guess a supply of CBS overprint labels were loaded into the hopper one day, with the same lacquers in use.

In front of these three are the two saxophones: Coltrane’s tenor left and Adderley’s alto right, then of course we have Miles Davis’ trumpet front and centre stage. Then each and every copy is hand made by mastering engineer Pietro Benini before being signed off, serial numbered and packaged for sale.Side 2 songs are corrected but not left center instead top line is off center or indented while song 2 is non indented. This music lives and breathes behind and in front of my loudspeakers, and my speakers get lost somewhere in the middle of the stage. Close your eyes and, no matter how many times you may have heard it before, your experience will parallel that of the players that recorded these gems. The much touted all-time multi-platinum sales figure is 4 million to date, in all formats including CD and download, I imagine worldwide, but I don’t think that figure is helpful in getting to vinyl sales.

Like you stated…according to the list it should be a later press but it is misprinted on label and jacket.Like the recently reviewed Blue Train by John Coltrane, this release is from Hemiolia Records, a niche artisan Italian label which solely offers analogue titles. The five completed tracks from that session with producer Cal Lampley – “On Green Dolphin Street,” “Fran-Dance” (with an alternate take), “Stella by Starlight,” and “Love for Sale” – are the only other studio recordings of the sextet with Adderley, Coltrane, Evans, Chambers, and Cobb (though live recordings exist on other Columbia/ Legacy album releases from the Newport Jazz Festival in July, and New York’s Plaza Hotel in September). The album features Davis's ensemble sextet consisting of saxophonists John Coltrane and Julian 'Cannonball' Adderley, pianist Bill Evans, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb, with new band pianist Wynton Kelly appearing on one track in place of Evans. At least, not legally, which is a key consideration – not only in terms of legitimacy and ethics, but also (importantly) the quality of what you’re getting. Apparently, the only channel fed through reverb plates was the centre channel, so any reverb was on this channel only and therefore depending on how that was mixed, it would considerably affect the overall sense of ambiance.

Hardware-wise it comes on two full reels of Recording the Masters SM900 tape: their highest specified tape available. It was captured on January 14, 1961, at Hibiya Public Hall in Tokyo during the band’s first-ever tour of Japan. Regarded as Davis’ masterpiece, it is also reckoned to be the best selling Jazz album ever, with shipments estimated at over 5 million copies.Davis played trumpet sublime with his ensemble sextet featuring pianist Bill Evans, drummer Jimmy Cobb, bassist Paul Chambers, and saxophonists John Coltrane and Julian “Cannonball” Adderley with Wyton Kelly playing piano on “Freddy the Freeloader. There are clusters around certain letters, for example 1AJ on Side 1 is found with Side 2 as 1AD, 1AE,1AF and 1AG.

This speed issue affected the album’s first three tracks, “So What,” “Freddie Freeloader” and “Blue in Green,” making them a barely perceptible quarter-tone sharp. LJC says: please feel free to weigh in if you think I’ve got something wrong (which you can put straight), or you can add something to the story, speak up, perhaps your promo doesn’t fit with my m. I think that it would be very useful and informative, so if anyone better informed than I wants to run with the idea, please go ahead! Decided to try and source an early version of Kind of blue to see what the differences might be between different cd versions.e. Miles fans) all know: the source used for the original vinyl release (and also the ultra-collectable 2-track and 4-track 7. It looks like the jackets didn’t really undergo any design changes throughout the original mono release era (1959-1967) so I think any mono jacket from that period should be the “correct” one–can anyone confirm this? Before now, it was only addressed in 1995 for the Classic Records edition and by Columbia Records — or their latter-day parent, Sony Music — on a CD reissue in the late ’90s. Beginning with the Byrds, the Doors, Carlos Santana, and the Allman Brothers, most rock improvisation has been modal. These with the location of Columbia principal record plants East and Central US, which makes good sense, but not from the point of view of West Coast distribution.
