About this deal

Some cultural stereotypes crop up as well which I believe Walliams has also been pulled up on in his World's Worst Children/Teachers books. She spends her days reading comics about alien invasions, doodling UFOs and gazing at the stars through her old, battered telescope. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. A mysterious figure in a shiny silver spacesuit, boots, gloves, cape and mirrored helmet, Spaceboy speaks in a spooky voice, his face completely hidden behind his helmet.

The lonely Ruth sees an UFO flash across the sky through her telescope and accompanied by her dog creeps out of her creaky attic to see what it is – this despite her ogre aunt who belongs to the genre of Cinderella’s Ugly Sisters and all the wicked stepmothers across fairy tale genres. It has the usual Walliams slapstick humour but less of the non-PC and gross stuff that he is known for. The story itself was both fun and wacky as well as being educational as it was based on real events.

David Walliams is a literary phenomenon whose books have sold more than 50 million copies worldwide and have been translated into fifty-five languages. This book has various examples of onomatopoeia and vocabulary which could extend the narrative writing of young students and provides links to 1960s history and brief information about space. It's always the same with the whole flying saucer crashing in a cornfield- But I don't get why the whole twist was added: to me, it just ruined the whole story.

The night sky is the only pleasure Ruth gets since she was left as an orphan on her evil aunt's steps. And so, when a blazing flying saucer shoots across the sky one night, Ruth dashes out from behind her telescope to find out more. One night, as she is observing the stars, a flying saucer falls from the sky and crashes in Aunt Dorothy's wheat field. A thrill a minute book, Spaceboy is filled with chases – each one of which is different and shows the stretch of Walliam’s imagination. It's not about the length of time it takes a child to finish a book, it's about consistency, and if a child reads frequently, daily, for about 10 minutes, that's all the difference it makes between developing reasoning skills, confidence, a great vocab and the hunger to learn more, to know more. Yuri Gagarin became a national hero and celebrity when he became the first human to journey into outer space in April 1961.

Pretty much every page was just a load of silly speech full of puns and jokes, and there was barely anything serious. Schock's plan is to launch a rocket before the Russians, who are supposed to launch theirs in a few days. The book is a chapter book but it is equally also a picture book as half of the content is illustrative. It's the 1960's and space is a hot topic as the USA tries to copy their Russian rivals in the space race. They try to grab Ruth, Kevin, and Yuri, but the children decide that it is not worth staying on Planet Earth. And it seems David is quite behind on gender stereotypes as there's always some cobblers about boys doing one thing and girls doing another or so-and-so looking/acting like a girl etc. He has gone on to take the children’s literary world by storm, dominating sales charts and twice winning the National Book Awards Children’s Book of the Year. Aunt Dorothy makes Ruth work from dawn till dusk on her failing Ostrich farm, and also makes her share the minimal food she does get with her only friend - her dog Yuri.

There is a silliness to it but also a depth as both Ruth and Spaceboy have a parent-guardian who abuses them verbally on a daily bases. bestselling author David Walliams for a breathless cinematic adventure full of mystery, action, laughs and surprises - and a secret that could change the course of history. Ruth loves to look up into the stars at night, imagining shooting up into space in a rocket like her idol, Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. It's a nice and semi-inspiring story about a girl and her dog, who live on a farm, and how their lives change after discovering that an "Alien" crash-lands in their garden. Most of David Walliams’ books are set in present time and in England whereas this book was set in 1960’s USA.
