About this deal

Given the scale of his achievements, and the brilliance of the football teams he constructed over 27 years at Old Trafford, it feels churlish to carp about the quality of an autobiography published hard on the heels of his retirement. Sir Alex who stepped down at the end of last season, continues on from his previous autobiography Managing My Life: The Autobiography. My father told me this when I was a little shithead of a teenager and didn't study (I discovered that strange life form - girls).

Little did Ferguson know when the book was published in 1999 that there was plenty more to come as manager of Manchester United! Wether you love or loath Utd and Ferguson it is a great insight into a brilliant footballing brain and the characters he dealt with and the non-negotiables he had as a manager. Reading: this is something that I have to say that I find surprising in this age, the relatively few and getting fewer people who read.Anyone could use his ideas, lessons and thoughts in their lives, be it managing themselves or a huge team. It has been said that the values great managers like Jock Stein, Sir Matt Busby, Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley brought to their jobs in football were rooted in their mining background.

First let me state, I am not an Man U fan but I love football and having grown up knowing only Alex Ferguson as the manager of Manchester united I was very much looking forward to this audio book. Ferguson also revealed the secret for his success – family support and an absolute passion for winning. This is "control" – the key word in Ferguson's philosophy of management – exerted well after the final whistle has been blown.

After moving cities a few times, retiring from playing and assuming coaching roles then team management, Alex became successful and took on the major challenge awaiting anyone brave enough; the well-paid, heavy-drinking and ageing Manchester United team (some did not fall in those categories).
