About this deal

I could have done without the nursery rhymes and the occasional Shakespearean quote that began every new chapter, but otherwise I found this an enjoyable and worthwhile read. I also wanted to show that anxiety isn’t the same as fear—sometimes our anticipation of something, or what we imagine in our heads, is the worst part of it all, and in a moment of crisis, we can really rise to the occasion. The sweet connection between Marin and Evie is solid and affirming, providing levying contrast to occasional moments of gruesome imagery and outright horror.

Nobody knows that within the gun lobby lurks a band of extremists who believe that the bill will work against them. Evie Hallowell is every bit as strange as her younger sisters, and yet Marin is quickly drawn in by Evie’s compelling behavior and ethereal grace. The youngest, Thea, (an affectionate little girl) has the odd habit of burying her dolls in the nearby woods; the oldest, Wren, plots horrible pranks aimed to get rid of their new nanny; Alice is an absent and distracted parent; only the cook/housekeeper Neera has a kind word for Marin. She likewise struggles to resist his stormy gray eyes, dark hair, and rakish behavior, even as they’re pitted against each other in the Trials and by the king himself.Given that this story was compared to one of my favorite shows, I had high expectations, and this novel exceeded them.

McCauley offers just a touch of magical realism here, layering a painfully honest exploration of domestic violence with a subtle eeriness. Publication information is for the USA, and (unless stated otherwise) represents the first print edition. But Molly’s already preoccupied, following the passage of a bill to legalise the carrying of hidden weapons, and burdened by the wealth of personal memories this brings. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. The first half of the book moved a little too slowly for my liking, but the second half more than made up for it.

All the characters are great: the two children are definitely a fun addition to the story (and this is coming from someone who cannot stand kids). I’m currently revising my next book, another YA with horror elements about a group of girls stranded on an island in the Pacific Northwest with a monster. A gothic love story meets gothic horror story, with expert pacing, dark family secrets, and a twisted reveal I didn't see coming.Marin, Evie, Wren, Thea, and Neera were wonderful characters and I found myself attaching to Marin pretty quickly. It’s definitely the type of thriller that ramps up the tension at such a slow pace you don’t realise just how creeped out you are until there’s a moment with unexplained blood leading up to a bedroom window where something has definitely just crawled either to or from.
