Although images of violence, sexuality, and the Black Power movement were routinely examined by screen regulators in the 20th century for their influence on audiences who were often imagined as impressionable, blacking up on screen was thought to be harmless and have little real impact. Since its cancellation in 1978, The Black and White Minstrel Show has come to be regarded with disdain.
