About this deal

These were very popular in the early-2000s, after The Matrix made great use of them, but now they feel a bit faddish and distracting. The film has a new 4K remaster and looks superb much better than the old dated transfer on the previous releases.

For the very first time, fluidity is as good as it needs to be, so all of the action footage where the camera moves fast and chooses many different angles to capture the rapid kicks and jumps looks sensational.

The result is nothing short of spectacular, with the lush and highly detailed production design now being seen in all of its glory like it’s the first time. Released in 2001 and directed by Christophe Gans, Brotherhood of the Wolf quickly made a name for itself, thanks to an uncommon blend of horror, martial arts and period drama. I simply do not think that there was enough room for meaningful improvements -- the footage with the creature, the overhead shots with the effects and narration, the mass fights, everything sounds great again. As panic sweeps across the region, the King sends his finest military minds, the scientist and adventurer Grégoire de Fronsac and his Iroquois Indian blood brother Mani to flush out the Beast and kill it, but that is more difficult and complex than first thought. At the time, digital colour grading was still a relatively new process, as were the techniques for scanning and digitising film and subsequently mastering back a 35mm film negative for projection. Finance is provided by PayPal Credit (a trading name of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH). The Brotherhood of the Wolfrides high with a four-disc release that includes a BD100 for the 4K disc, a BD50 for the standard Blu-ray feature, a BD25 for special features and a BD50 for the theatrical cut and its accompanying supplements.Once again, Gans discusses his influences, including that of Chang Cheh’s The New One-Armed Swordsman and Michael Mann’s Last of the Mohicans. As Fronsac and Mani investigate the incidents around the area, they become inclined to believe that this ‘beast’ is far from the large wolf many claim it to be and it may, in fact, have a human owner controlling its actions. In native 4K, HDR even creates the impression that the dynamic range of the visuals is off, which should not be the case.

I enjoyed the film a lot back then but, for whatever reason, haven’t revisited it for a long time since those first couple of viewings.

As mentioned, Dacascos is a pleasure to watch, being highly skilled in martial arts on top of generally having a magnetic presence. The rest of the commentary features a lot of technical information about the framing, lensing, special effects, lighting choices, and action choreography, as well as some interesting comments about the impressive cast that was assembled and the reception of the film.

Studiocanal's 4-disc release of Brotherhood of the Wolf has just about everything fans could possibly want - including, notably, the elusive Theatrical Cut which, whilst not necessarily superior, is a version of the movie which many have wanted to revisit for quite some time, and earns its own Blu-ray Disc and thus, finally, 1080p presentation. As for supplements, while the vintage featurettes far outweigh anything newly produced, there are still hours upon hours of content to dig through here. Also, the shift can be so strong that in many areas people's faces and hair become overwhelmed by the cyan.
