About this deal

After recording two final albums with the Move, Lynne and Wood formed Electric Light Orchestra, realizing Lynne's dream of pairing classical instruments (cello, violin, french horn, oboe, etc.

On 2nd November 2021, Jeff Lynne announced the release of his book Wembley Or Bust, which looks back at the band's memorable 2017 Wembley Stadium performance and talks through the production of the concert as well as providing behind the scenes photos and details. With shades of Citizen Kane in the music video, Lynne mirrors Orson Welles uttering "rosebud" right at the end by saying "Horace Wimp" in a close-up. The albums The Electric Light Orchestra, ELO 2, Eldorado, and Balance of Power were not represented on the compilation.

Yet, it wasn't meant to be as Roy Wood, Andy Craig, Bill Hunt and Hugh McDowell all quit to form another group, leaving Jeff Lynne to front the band. The Beatles-style lyrics describe a week in the life of a repressed man who wants to show his affection towards a woman he meets. To make the song, Jeff explained: "To get the sound on the beginning, you know, the American telephone sound, we phoned from England to America to a number that we know nobody would be at, to just listen to it for a while. From "Evil Woman", "Don't Bring Me Down" and "Mr Blue Sky" to "Livin' Thing" and “Sweet Talkin’ Woman", this 1CD/ 20 track VERY BEST OF compilation contains a string of hits that most bands would envy, and is an excellent introduction (or re-introduction!

It's since regarded as one of their essential songs, and has been sampled countless times over the years. As ELO's stateside success was on the upward curve, Lynne consciously used an American ring-tone at the beginning for added appeal. The track has been described as having a funkier backbeat to their previous material, showing a change in style for the band - so it's no surprise that it was a personal favourite track of John Lennon's.

The first ELO single that didn't feature a string section, 'Don't Bring Me Down' is an undeniable adrenaline-inducing, fist-pumper of a rock song that was their biggest hit on both sides of the pond, if you don't include their Olivia Newton-John collaboration. Electric Light Orchestra are an English symphonic rock band which formed in Birmingham, Warwickshire in 1970. Jeff Lynne has written some terrific hooks over the years (see pretty much every track on our list of the Top 10 Electric Light Orchestra Songs), but this is one of his all-time best. On the track's feature, one fan commented: 'whenever i hear this song i can't help but think of Bill Murray's hair in the bowling showdown scene', continuing: 'it went well in that scene.
