About this deal

Students learning the Bengali language have also valued the English/Bengali translations on every page. It won the Books Are My Bag Non-Fiction Award 2018, and was shortlisted for Waterstones Book of the Year and the Specsavers Non-Fiction Book of the Year 2018. The book shows that the law indeed needs to be ‘supercharged’ so that the likes of Mr Bumble are not party to a law that is neither fit for purpose nor able to explain its purpose.

I have read this book twice this year, it is so good and, since this book was published in September, there have been so many more examples of misinformation arousing misdirected public outrage on legal matters.Although increasingly heavy going, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the law – which, as TSB persuasively concludes in the epilogue, should be every single one of us! The law and the legal justice system underpins the very fabric of our society, ensures the smooth running of our lives and even our safety and liberty. And however much politicians and tabloids rail against huge amounts of Legal Aid being paid out to wrong'uns (who never actually see a penny of it as it is paid to the lawyers in less-than-generous remuneration for their work), those caught on the wrong foot should not have to sell their home to clear their name. The further conceptual understanding of law introduces us to a shadowy and sinister type of existence.

You've seen all the tv documentaries, you've read all the stories of people who spent years in prison, even death row, before it was proved (usually these days through dna) that they didn't do it. While it doesn’t matter in terms of judging quality, I continue to believe SB is a woman simply because, again. There's a lot to be said about the political attacks on the legislation that is designed to keep us safe from those who would prey on us, and this book states its case well.Rather than reminding these bright young minds of the essential function of criminal defence, Harvard administrators promised a ‘climate review’ to investigate Professor Sullivan’s conduct.

NB that while the current govt is rightly held up for its flagrant attack on human rights and access to justice, the previous Labour govt was just as guilty in its contempt for the rule of law. The name of that someone was Sir Fred Goodwin, and in the months following the 2008 financial crash, he became public enemy number one. I feel like this is a book I would recommend to people unfamiliar with the law as it has great articulation of key principles. The government have passed a statute which breaches international law, whilst telling us they haven’t.Resultantly, the reader grows increasingly disheartened about all the misinformation that's doing the rounds! In this latest book, SB turns a sharp eye to the media and how MPs utterly trash the reputation of the courts and legal practitioners with huge detrimental impact on everyone – and often creating situations of considerable danger. You may think, as we are encouraged to do, that, if you are a law-abiding citizen, being kind to your fellow man and minding your own business, the law has little to offer you. As a result the general public are misled about sentences passed, the need to change laws, the importance to all of us of our human rights and why it is important to all of us that our governments obey the law and follow the rule of law.
