About this deal

The event was broadcast live on KROQ with Richard Blade interviewing the band before the doors opened at 9pm. million copies following its release in March 1990, 'Violator' gave the cult British band - Dave Gahan, Martin Gore, Andy 'Fletch' Fletcher and Alan Wilder - the critical acclaim they finally deserved. From François’ point of view, he spent a lot of time mixing ‘Personal Jesus’ including the remixes and doing the album, there was his own dissatisfaction with how ‘Enjoy The Silence’ was turning out.

At the end of the day, it’s a good pop song… yes, there are probably songs like ‘Enjoy The Silence’ that were bigger hits, but for a song that was done and dusted very early on in that process, it made perfect sense to release that first. If not for this album, probably I wouldn’t dive deep into the in depeche MODE’s music as much as it happened after 1989. The album revealed a new maturity and sensitivity to Martin Gore’s songwriting and allowed the band’s inquisitive Alan Wilder to come to the fore as a principal architect of the band’s approach to studio production.

This period in the band's history also found them forging a deeply trusted and influential partnership with photographer and designer Anton Corbijn, often viewed as the fifth member of Depeche Mode at this time. In tomorrow's blog, Kevin May will give you an insight into his own views on Violator and how it inspired him to start the whole Halo project. And depeche MODE at concerts could only play on combs, on the squares, in front of the halls where they performed.

The seamless second side with its instrumental interludes added tension and experimentation to proceedings while Martin Gore’s lyrics possessed an honesty that while dark and deviant, still retained a naïve innocence that many loners could relate to. He contributed a blog and that led to his involvement in The Global Spirit Tour Project and, ultimately, to my involvement in Halo.Last year Kevin very kindly asked me if I would co-author the book and I was delighted to accept his offer. Written by uber-fans Kevin May and David McElroy, with ‘Halo’ we find ourselves shadowing the band in the studio, on an intense, pivotal worldwide tour and on the sets of arty Super 8 vignettes. I have been told that DEPECHE MODE do not interviews for biographies, so I needed to talk to people on the periphery of that era, like producers, engineers and tour personnel.

He first heard 'Enjoy The Silence' in his parents' car on a day when he was too lazy to walk to school and from that point he was hooked. We observe the often misunderstood but hugely important role that the late Andy Fletcher played in the band and witness the tumultuous emotional pressures on the band’s frontman, Dave Gahan. Coincidentally, an early job in journalism was as a reporter in Essex, covering Depeche Mode’s hometown of Basildon. The band would rarely conduct interviews as a four-piece, primarily to save time rather than (at this stage) because they'd fallen out with one another.
