About this deal

I liked it, a lot, even if it's not as dark as I thought it would have been ( at least for me, guess my mind is kinda deviated at this point LOL). If you haven’t read Fiona Cummins other books I highly recommend them including When I Was Ten that is a doozy of a standalone. This book made me question what I was comfortable with and what I was willing to believe for the sake of a story. Their mobile phones are still charging, school bags are by the door ready to go, kettle is still warm and cars are still in the garage. There are open schoolbags by the door, phones charging on the counter, doors on the drive and in the garage, even the smell of breakfast being prepared, but no sign of Gray or Piper Holden, or their children Riva and Artie, apart from a message on a mirror and a misting of what appears to be blood on the chandelier….

Then a gruesome discovery in Riva's room - the phrase "make them stop" scrawled across the mirror in blood and spray of blood on one of the chandeliers, changes everything. But while she had sometimes attempted to do what he’d asked of her, she’d been unable to resist the siren song of liquid oblivion. Descriptive murder scenes that might be both chilling and brutal, predictable ending yet still I admire how devious and clever the plan goes till the end. Breakfast table laid out, radio playing, school bags by the door, phones charging, cars in the garage … It all looks absolutely normal. Many thanks to Fiona Cummins, Pan Macmillan, and NetGalley for arc in exchange for my honest review.

Just when you think you know what is happening, the author lobs in a massive curveball to blow your theories apart. In a nutshell, Domestic Noir takes place primarily in homes and workplaces, concerns itself largely (but not exclusively) with the female experience, is based around relationships and takes as its base a broadly feminist view that the domestic sphere is a challenging and sometimes dangerous prospect for its inhabitants.

I like how he's not likeable at all and the author does not shy away from how ridiculous he is but rather leans on that and also how he's not redeemable at all! What I loved about this book is that the author has taken the seemingly perfect family situation – lavish lifestyle, beautiful home, successful business – and give it a wonderfully dark edge. ABOUT 'INTO THE DARK': THE PLACE: Seawings, a beautiful Art Deco home overlooking the sweep of the bay in Midtown-on-Sea. A mercenary Farstalker Kinband of the alien Kroot is first to seek the pick of the plunder, only to be cornered as elite Imperial Navy Breachers storm the hulk. Due to the prologue, I confess that like Rhiannon, my suspicions about a certain character remained until the shocking end which totally caught me off guard. I think the blurb doesn’t really match the story line, I think it was obvious, I wasn’t blown away and certainly not impressed.

The family's phones are there, charging, the kettle is still warm, and their passports haven't been taken. Her yellow raincoat flapped in the cool breeze when she walked by, that blonde hair making her look like a drowned rat as she stopped to taste the rain. While it's not a romance you can definitely see how their characters change due to their relationship and how they'll do literally anything just so they can be the center of each other's world. The ideas were there but there was too much work to put into red herrings; almost as though it was to distract from the complete lack of substance to the actual story. My favorite parts of this book were when Carlie was reading her mother's journal, what her mother experienced was written beautifully, her struggles and pain captivated both the MC and reader, a feat not easy to achieve.

The whole Holden family, Piper, Gray and the children Riva and Artie are no where to be seen but their belongings are all still here.
