About this deal

My mother used to read a lot of books when I was a child and I saw how much enjoyment these books would bring her. As you work way into the book, I believe the reader, like my self, will also come very quickly to that conclusion with the turn of every page of this 335-page paperback. From the British government’s involvement in Iraq to the state of North Korea and now Russia, he has reported on and published revealing literature on some of the world’s most dangerous and closely guarded secrets. Despite not agreeing on those 2 points I didn’t take any marks from the rating as the book is focused on Putin and that is nicely done. He has helped free seven people falsely convicted of killing babies, starting with Sally Clark and Angela Cannings.

In Killer in the Kremlin, award-winning journalist John Sweeney takes listeners from the heart of Putin's Russia to the killing fields of Chechnya, to the embattled cities of an invaded Ukraine. a Royal Television Society prize (2004) for "Angela's Hope," a BBC One documentary about a woman wrongly convicted of murdering her three babies. Far too many do not take into account the evilness of Putin and the deaths that he has not only caused but actually directed. The Killer in the Kremlin covers Putin’s life and includes the controversies, such as his adoption (or not) and if he is paedophile (or not). Before joining the BBC in 2001, Sweeney worked for twelve years at The Observer, where he covered wars and revolutions in more than sixty countries including Romania, Algeria, Iraq, Chechnya, Burundi and Bosnia. This time as a part of a rehearsed joke, Sweeney goes into a similar outburst in January 2009 when being interviewed on Radio 4 about the Tom Cruise film Valkyrie—clearly referring to the episode two years previously. I enjoyed hearing about the author's recent experiences in Ukraine and about his interviews with people living there now. One spoke of his BTR (armoured personnel carrier) breaking down and being towed into battle by a lorry.

Over the course of his career, John has won an Emmy, two Royal Television Society Awards, a Sony Gold Award, a What the Papers Say Journalist of the Year Award, an Amnesty International Award and the Paul Foot. Sweeney may be correct in suggesting that Putin has been an expert conman and that his victims included former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, UK prime minister Tony Blair and the billionaire oligarch Boris Berezovsky. Instead, the bulk of the book is focused on paraphrasing the works of other, better books with the addition of being written by a somewhat manic Steve Zissou figure. They successfully encouraged desertion from the army, they gave legal aid to the deserters and if anyone won the first Chechen war it was these brave women.Putin, one might speculate, knew better, and realised that, with every passing month, Ukraine was already gradually and genuinelybecoming post-Soviet , so he simply couldn’t wait any longer. the Amnesty International prize for "Victims of the Torture Train," about human rights abuses in Chechnya. The “drunken rage” may exist in Sweeney’s imagination and the “might of Russia” that he refers to was non-existent at the time. His death made a striking impression on Sweeney: “Nemtsov was an extraordinary man, the sweetest, funniest and most human Russian I’ve ever met. BORIS NEMTSOV, ASSASSINATED RUSSIAN OPPOSITION LEADER * 'A dictator, bent on rebuilding an empire, will never erase the people's love for liberty.

If even 10% of what is written in this book is factual, one has to wonder how so many western leaders chose cheap gas and oil over human rights, a free press, an independent judiciary, lack of corruption and the ability to look out of a 10th floor window without falling out. the never-ending exploitation of thousands of still unrepentant, greedy, non-Russian useful idiots, ignorant of the true nature of the new Russian authorities, etc. The evil dwarf-president is merely another one of those damn fool misfits like that scrappy little Stalin, or wee little Lenin. No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. I believe that what is happening in eastern Europe is a consequence of Carlyle’s Great Man theory of history. The personal tone and the author's lax approach to citations reduced my confidence in his credibility. Most notably, Seamus Martin from The Irish Times has described the book as “infuriatingly selective with the truth”. The book starts out with some passionate, melodramatic self-aggrandising about Sweeney's adventures in Ukraine, which could have been interesting if spun out into an examination of the present, Russia's crimes and the impact he's observed in Ukrainian society. There are sources listed at the back of the book but no footnotes which make some of the sources or claims difficult to follow up.

Sweeney poses a final question: ‘Would Vladimir Putin, knowing that he has not long to live, kill us all? This is a remarkable and extremely up to date compilation of the serial crimes of the gangster Vladimir Putin who has, though manipulation and murder, made himself into the master of a powerful nation. Samara’s military hospital housed the wounded and I can still hear in my mind’s ear the struggled breathing of a kid who had been shot through the throat.
