Adjusting the height of lawn mowers has always been an issue for many users with difficult and fiddly to adjust mechanism. However, with the Bosch model the height adjustment button is extremely simple and takes a matter of seconds to get that perfect height that can be clearly seen from the indicator. Aimed at lawns of around 550m² the Bosch Universal Rotak 36-550 cordless lawn mower has a generous 40-litre grass bag which means fewer trips to the compost heap leaving your time free to get on with the important tasks. Features I also tested the almost identical but slightly larger Bosch UniversalRotak 650. In my video review, I found that both the 550 and 650 models have some key upgrades that make them excellent choices for medium to large lawns. Cutting and grass collection is improved. Bosch has also made environmental and durability enhancements.

The Bosch UniversalRotak 36-550 also comes with “LeafCollect” blades. An impressive feature that shifts the focus away from this being a taxing and laborious task, that many people put off time and time again, into something much more pleasant and manageable. What LeafCollect does is pretty much what it says on the tin, it collects the leaves for you in a bag so that once you’ve finished cutting the grass, you don’t have to get out the rake and collect all of the chopped and mashed up leaves from a lawn. A great little problem solver!This Bosch EasyRotak 36-550 is supplied with a rear roller, however due to the lightweight nature of this mower, the stripes will not be long lasting as you would achieve with a heavier petrol lawn mower or a dedicated lawn roller. The Bosch UniversalRotak 550 has a very respectable 40 litre grass box. Though this may not be enough for the full 550 square metre rating, it will reduce the number of emptying trips that you will need to do. How good is the Bosch UniversalRotak 36-550 cordless lawnmower? The Bosch UniversalRotak 36-550 cordless lawnmower is a cordless lawnmower that charges its battery in around 125 minutes and produces a 50 minutes run time. It has a large 40 litre grass box, a 36 cm cutting width and 6 cutting heights that range from 25mm to 70mm. The Bosch UniversalRotak 36-550 cordless lawnmower is best suited to lawns up to 550m² in size. This really is the easiest and smoothest height adjustment I have used and wish all lawn mower brands adopted this mechanism. You can see this innovative height adjustment in my video of the very similar Bosch AdvancedRotak 650 below.I would also recommend that you have a look at the Cordless Gtech mower 2.0, if you don’t mind mowing away from Bosch, that is currently on offer with 40% off. (this is the biggest discount Gtech have ever offered) It’s crucial that whatever lawnmower you chose has height adjustment. This is, unfortunately, often overlooked by consumers, in favour of battery life and power. Still, it’s really important. It plays an essential part in maintaining a healthy lawn and being able to accommodate to different seasons and different lawn types, so make sure you consider this when choosing your next lawnmower. Thankfully, this is an area in which the Bosch UniversalRotak 36-550 also excels. With a whopping six adjustable cutting heights, ranging from 25-70mm, this machine will give you a year-round, all lawn type, perfectly adaptable, mowing experience. One that most competitors in this price range fail to meet, with the majority of mowers, offering only three height settings. Oh, and did we mention, that it’s all done by the push of a button? Bosch do basic rotary models that include the 32R, 34R and 36R but this model is a more advanced design. I have tested one of these recently and it was excellent but costly. If you’ve struggled with uncomfortable mowers in the past then this is an excellent option. The whole point of this design is that the user stands in a more natural position and reduces strain which could go a long way in easing pain and discomfort that is exacerbated by other mowers. There is no mulching as standard on this machine, but it does have something called leaf collect. Leaf Collect, means that the blades cut and collect dead leaves from across your lawn. The suction from the blades will then send the leaves to the cutting box with the grass. Again you can see this in action from my video above. There is a safety button in the centre of the control handle that must be depressed before the operator may use the machine. This is standard with most electric lawn mowers. Mulching

This mower is supplied with either 1 x 4Ah battery or 2 x 2Ah batteries that charge in 125 minutes for the 4Ah and will give a free run time of around 50 minutes to enable you to cover a lawn up to 550m² in size. Naturally this run time will depend on the condition of the lawn, however the Powerdrive (Efficient Energy Management) feature adjusts the power so you only use what you need. This is a great feature from Bosch and definitely helps to preserve the life of the batteries.
