LIVING BUTTERFLIES and MOTHS. For film shoots, weddings and other events we are sometimes asked for butterflies to release. Foreign species cannot be used for this and we don't supply living adults. You can buy pupae but not to a specific date, so you need to organise the synchronisation of emergence for the particular requirement. When a butterfly emerges from the chrysalis, its mouth is made up of two separate pieces. The butterfly must "fuse" or "zip" these two parts together to form one tubular proboscis before it is able to eat. Gaze in amazement at how these wonderful cretures turn into butterflies. These little critters are a wonder of nature. See how caterpillars grow through a series of moults with intermediate stages called instars. The last moult takes them into the inactive pupal or chrysalis stage.

To ensure the highest possible survival rate, avoid extreme temperature fluctuations and direct sunlight. Remove the silk fabrics and insect droppings from the butterfly pupae before hanging the butterfly pupa in the Butterfly Habitat. A caterpillar's first meal is often its own eggshell. The outer shell of the egg is rich in protein and gives them a nutritious boost. Butterflies will often feed from mud puddles to ingest minerals and salts, which are important supplements to their diet.
