About this deal

When choosing a substitute for Coleman fuel you need to consider fuel price, ease of use and ongoing maintenance. Coleman fuel is seriously expensive compared to some of the other options. So what’s the best Coleman Fuel substitute? But remember, these are disposable cylinders. You shouldn’t attempt to refill a fuel canister designed for one-time use. It’s just not worth the risk! Coleman Fuel Expiration Personally I use paraffin fueled stoves when family camping and petrol or alcohol fueled stoves when on a day hike. One of the advantages of this is that you can easily make your own Coleman fuel any time and of any amount without worrying about any shortages.

Don’t confuse white gas with white spirit which is less pure and similar to kerosene. It will work, but it burns dirty and will eventually gunk up your stove. 2) Kerosene: Cheap, Clean, But Doesn’t Work in Every Stove Camping stoves/lanterns can run off of a handful of different fuels: white gas, kerosene, diesel, gasoline, and even diesel fuel in a pinch. So why does everybody recommend Coleman Fuel or white gas when there are other options available? It’s because white gas is by far the purest fuel source so it reduces the amount of maintenance required for your camping gear. White gas is easy to light, works everywhere, and it has unparalleled purity so you’ll rarely have to clean clogged fuel lines. Kerosene’s a close alternative, but it smells and you’ll have to clean out your fuel lines more frequently. It’s the purest form of gasoline that you can easily buy. It burns hot/clean regardless of the weather and lasts for a very long time. You won’t have to worry about the fuel gunking up your stove or the occasional rough start.

Need it in a hurry? We are also able to offer before 12 noon and Saturday delivery services. See here for information on these services When you are going away for camping for a long time, make sure that you get a fresh supply of gasoline. When using diesel or kerosene, you should also store them away from your tent. This is because diesel and kerosene usually produce some smell that if inhaled can cause dizziness. They are also highly flammable.Kerosene/Diesel/Gasoline: As I mentioned above kerosene is a great alternative to Coleman fuel in a bind, but it’s a much dirtier fuel source. You’ll have to clean clogged fuel lines more frequently, deal with soot on cooking gear, and have a nasty kerosene taste/smell in all your food. Diesel will also work in a bind, but it’s even dirtier than kerosene. You will have to clean out your fuel lines constantly and it will completely cover your cooking gear in soot. Gasoline is a cleaner option since it’s so similar to white gas, but the additives to improve engine performance will damage your fuel lines. Gasoline definitely works in a bind, but you’ll need to wash out your gear so it doesn’t destroy the rubber seals in your stove/lantern. Other fuels that burn at low temperatures like biodiesel and plant oils probably won’t work. Some people decide to use them with mixed results. Personally, they are way too much hassle when you can buy cheaper and cleaner alternatives. Bonus: Denatured Alcohol (Sometimes) Butane Stoves: Butane Stoves are the lighter younger brother of propane options. Jetboil Butane Stoves are by far the most popular option. Butane stoves are the lightweight king of short trips, but they’re expensive and you run into issues after 2-3 days. There’s a tipping point around the 3 day mark where you need to carry extra butane canisters making up the weight difference of your liquid fuel canister. You also have stability concerns, cold weather issues, butanes hard to find, and you’re set with a set amount of fuel in your butane canisters. Butane stoves would be great if there were larger canisters available, but liquid fuel stoves are a much better option for longer trips. Instead of taking risks getting inventive with white gas, try to be sensible with how much you buy. In that case, you’ll have a good three years to use it up before it goes bad. (And if you aren’t going to use it all in time, you can always give it to a friend who loves camping and tell them when it needs to be used by.)
