About this deal

Jacqueline Wilson wrote her first novel when she was nine years old, and she has been writing ever since. She is now one of Britain’s bestselling and most beloved children’s authors. She has written over 100 books and is the creator of characters such as Tracy Beaker and Hetty Feather. More than forty million copies of her books have been sold. The thing about abuse in this book is that it is subtle. The father does not think he is doing anything wrong. He thinks that Dilys and Beauty should be grateful to him for giving them so many dresses and makeup and all the luxury they live in. He thinks that they owe him to be pretty and good for him. Serial Spouse: Gerry has been married three times. He divorced his first wife Avril to marry his second wife Ashleigh, then divorced her to marry his third and current wife Dilly. Avril gives the impression he tends to trade in his wives for younger, prettier women every decade or so and initially assumes Gerry left Dilly for another woman when she and Beauty turn on Avril's doorstep, only for Dilly to state that she left Gerry. Gerry's selfishness and controlling behavior also probably doesn't make him the best partner, especially if his treatment of Dilly is anything to go by. Random House said in a statement that it had been in "close discussion" with Wilson about age guidance. "Jacqueline can see the arguments both for and against printed age guidance on books but does retain some reservations about the subject," the publisher added. "She has agreed for age guidance to be put on the cover of Cookie but RHCB will maintain the discussion with her and her agent over the matter and will review the situation on a book by book basis." I also feel that the character of Beauty's father was particularly well portrayed. He obviously felt a certain amount of love and affection for his daughter and wife, and wasn't only a villain. However, he was capable of some truly awful things. It was nice to see a character in a younger child's book rendered in many different shades of grey.

Happy Marriage Charade: Dilly is desperately trying to maintain one with Gerry, especially at Beauty's birthday party. She eventually decides it's not worth it and leaves. Lily Alone by Jacqueline Wilson - review". The Guardian. 21 March 2011. Archived from the original on 10 August 2018 . Retrieved 20 April 2020. She has written over 70 best-selling books, and several have even been adapted for TV – most famously The Story of Tracy Beaker. Her signing sessions attract huge crowds of fans and last for hours! Over 25 million copies of her books have now been sold in the UK alone. When Beauty ends up on her favourite television show things couldn't have been better. But what will her dad make of it all? Amicable Exes: Played with in the case of Gerry and his first wife Avril. He got a house for her on one of his estates, indicating they are at least on speaking terms. However, it is stated that, despite being financially successful, Gerry hates giving money to his previous two wives and his three sons, the latter of whom he actually calls "lazy".

Dramatically Missing the Point: Gerry on several occasions. A particularly outrageous example is when he believes Dilly left him because she thought he was going to lose all his money. You know, as opposed to subjecting her and their daughter to years of abuse and humiliation. Eccleshare, Julia (3 October 2011). "Are we too young for Jacqueline Wilson's Girls in Love?". It is never revealed if Gerry gets any particular punishment for his domestic abuse. However, the story does throw around the possibility that his new business deal will not go through, and that he will get arrested for bribery. Ridiculously Cute Critter: Lily the rabbit and Birthday, the rabbit Rhona gets Beauty for her birthday. Which makes what happened to poor Birthday all the worse. Embarrassing First Name: Beauty regards her first name as this for most of the story. In the end, she doesn’t seem to mind it so much, after meeting a girl with an equally embarrassing first name: Princess. Together, they decide to form an Unusual Names Club. Dilly also considers her given name of Dilys as utterly ridiculous, assuming her mother “thought it sounded posh” and usually goes by Dilly. Tracy Beaker's Thumping Heart". Fantastic Fiction. Archived from the original on 22 October 2020 . Retrieved 20 April 2020. Everyone Loves Blondes: Dilly is blonde and very attractive. Gerry Cookson: Beauty's completely evil, vile, abusive and controlling father who has no good in him and emotionally abuses his wife and daughter. As well as winning many awards for her books, including the Children's Book of the Year, Jacqueline is a former Children's Laureate, and in 2008 she was appointed a Dame. Big Fancy House: The Cooksons' house. They live in a custom-built, six-bedroom house, with three bathrooms and a hot-tub. Beauty even has her own en-suite with taps shaped like dolphins. Control Freak: Gerry. On the lower end of the scale, the family are never allowed to wear shoes in the house in case they scratch the floor (which is somewhat reasonable)...on the other end, he tries to control what Beauty and Dilly wear, what they can say to him and even what hobbies they can do. Embarrassing Middle Name: Beauty's middle name is Mercedes (her father’s car) and she is teased mercilessly, with Skye saying should be called ‘ Ugly Skoda’.
