Our Story Starts in Africawritten by Patrice Lawrence and illustrated by Jeanetta Gonzales (Magic Cat) Ongoing Covid restrictions, reduced air and freight capacity, high volumes and winter weather conditions are all impacting transportation and local delivery across the globe. Sally speaks in broad Geordie which does make this a slightly difficult read and might put some children off which would be a great shame. I wondered why the author had not found another way of making her so Geordie without the sometimes difficult spelling. It can be sounded out of course and as an adult that can be done, but even so it is at times quite difficult to get the whole meaning of what she is saying. Tommy and his evacuee friend Sally find an injured German airman close to their home in the Lake District. When Sally convinces him to keep him hidden, Tommy must wrestle with the truth as the town searches for him, but Sally has secrets of her own... There is now a canon of excellent stories set in World War 2 and schools will be spoilt for choice. This one would work well in city schools because it shows a life completely different from the city and the many traditions which still occur - such as the sheep shearing. The remoteness of the setting and life in such a place brings a different element to the war stories. Suitable for upper KS2, this is a lovely addition to the stories of that era. Woundale is not a real place, but has been built out of all the real places I was told about in the family stories, such as the tarn with its secretive clumps of bulrushes, the stone circle that glinted under the moon like giant's teeth and the fells where you feel on top of the world. Being a Cumbrian myself, I know the region well. Woundale seemed a good name for a book set during the war years. Wounds can be healed as well as inflicted.Coffee house Caffè Nero has announced the 16-strong shortlist for the inaugural Nero Book Awards, recognising the outstanding books of the past 12... The Hare-Shaped Hole written by John Dougherty and illustrated by Thomas Docherty (Frances Lincoln)
