darkness, though I have to say it wasn't quite as much as I had hoped. Kind of interestingly, I didn't really feel that Dolby Vision and/or HDR Neil Marshall seems curiously sanguine about it all, kind of just offering, "Yeah, the producer found the negative", without much attendant intrigue. In This Collector's Edition of 'Dog Soldiers' from Scream Factory is a big improvement from the previous release. This new transfer is from a 2K scan and is presented in 1080p HD. It sports a 1.78:1 aspect ratio as well, which was supervised and approved by director Neil Marshall, which is funny, because he filmed 'Dog Soldiers in 16mm. Taking a 16mm film and upgrading it to 1080p HD can cause some issues. Miska, Brad (7 September 2020). "Neil Marshall's 'Dog Soldiers' Gets Restored 4K Release in the UK!". Bloody Disgusting . Retrieved 5 October 2020. There are around 186 minutes of bonus features included here. There are three audio commentaries to choose from both new and vintage. The extras port over the original bonus features from the previous release here and add some brand-new interviews as well. All of these are worth the time.

Sean Pertwee reflects on Dog Soldiers' legacy, on-set injuries and the sequels that never were". Radio Times. 13 October 2020 . Retrieved 4 August 2023. In that regard, you might expect this release to more aggressively tout the fact that evidently the negative was found, and even in online interviewsCombat (HD, 8 Mins.) - This is a short film by Neil Marshall, starring a couple of the actors from Dog Soldiers. It's worth watching. Narratively, Marshall and cinematographer Sam McCurdy weave a darkly threaded story that is as satisfying as it is unexpected. It fits snugly in all the right places with nice angles and visual flair. Much of the detail in Dog Soldiers feels fresh – even if we have seen situations like this one played out before on the silver screen. From beginning to end, Dog Soldiers feels inspired. This includes how the werewolves are brought to life by designer Uli Simon and the company who conducted the special effects, Image FX. The modern werewolf genre has been a durable but malleable one, with the basic tropes proving surprisingly adaptable into a variety of different situations and narratives. That’s especially interesting given the fact that most of those tropes have little to do with traditional werewolf folklore, but were instead largely created out of whole cloth by writer Curt Siodmak for the 1941 classic The Wolf Man (although he was building on ideas that were first explored in the 1935 film Werewolf of London). Yet as Carleton Young said in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, when the legend becomes fact, print the legend, and so it’s variations of Siodmak’s werewolf lore that have become indelible in popular culture. That’s a big reason why the genre has proven so versatile: audiences are already familiar with the basic conceit, and that fact frees filmmakers to spend more time working it into different contexts. Diverse productions like The Company of Wolves, Ginger Snaps, Bad Moon, and Teen Wolf have all proven how resilient that werewolves can be, and in 2002, writer/director Neil Marshall added his own unique spin to the genre with Dog Soldiers.

isn't a character-driven picture, and while it's somewhat difficult to become attached to any single scratching their heads at that comment I'd refer you first to my original Dog Soldiers Blu-ray review, which explicitly gets into the provenance of that 1080 release from Shout! Factory, but also to Leslie Felperin (16 October 2020). "Dog Soldiers review – gory larks with furry werewolves". The Guardian. Werewolves, Crawlers, Cannibals and More – A new 40-minute interview with Neil Marshall, in which he discusses quite frankly and candidly his career to date.In 2002, the film won the Brussels International Festival of Fantasy Film's Golden Raven, the festival's top award, as well as the audience prize, the Pegasus. One is a behind-the-scenes slideshow and the other is promo images and stills from the film. There are two types of werewolf. The tortured soul, cursed to be a beast that they cannot control during the full moon, such as in An American Werewolf in London, and the carnivorous kind, wanting to use their gift to wreak havoc, such as those in The Howling. Those in Dog Soldiers What a debut feature Neil Marshall had with Dog Soldiers in 2002. Taking the fairly standard ‘group trapped’ movie trope, and pitting squaddies against werewolves, he crafted a tight, scary, gory and funny film that he’s yet to better. Oh, The Descent might be a better horror film, indeed one of the best horror films of all time, but, in terms of all round satisfaction, Dog Soldiers is the one to beat. Shame his filmic outings have been all downhill ever since. Restoration from the Original Camera Negative Approved by Director Neil Marshall and Cinematographer Sam McCurdy

Retrieved 25 June 2014.Taste of Cinema writer David Harkin states that " Dog Soldiers ditches the drama of the original Wolfman of the 1940s and pushes Dog Soldiers into Aliens territory as seven-foot lycanthropes besiege a tiny cottage while macho soldiers fight for their lives". [21] Perhaps the centrepiece of the new extras is Werewolves Vs. Soldiers, a one hour documentary with cast and crew reflecting on the production of Dog Soldiers whilst Marshall’s early short film, Combat (1999) is also included. Juxtaposing imagery of a night out down the pub with war movie sound effects and music, it makes for an appropriate supporting feature that sets the vibe nicely for the main attraction. Note: Screenshots are sourced from the 1080 disc. As of the writing of this review, Shout! is not releasing a 1080 standalone disc, and so The sound, presented with both a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 mix, is also revelatory. While not dominating, the sound field is much better than previously released. Supplements: especially saturation, as can easily be seen by comparing the screenshots I've uploaded to accompany this review and the ones I uploaded to
