About this deal

Alex Radcliffe, Marketing Controller at Greene King said: “We are thrilled to see Level Head and Flint Eye available on the shelves in Tesco and Sainsbury’s supermarkets across the UK and we can’t wait to see them being enjoyed by our consumers at home. The UK’s leading pub company, Greene King, has announced the addition of four new premium beers to its portfolio, as the brewer looks to expand into the craft beer market for 2022. Greene King Brewing and Brands will be launching its new craft beers Flint Eye and Level Head, into Tesco and Sainsbury’s this month, following a successful launch in Waitrose and Morrisons. The craft and heritage of these beers are what makes them unique and different from other craft beers, as we combine our centuries worth of expertise to create distinct flavours that resonate with the modern-day craft drinker. We look forward to seeing our distribution continue to grow and more and more people enjoying Level Head and Flint Eye.”

The full bodied, hoppy ale includes rich malty characters, which are perfectly balanced with citrus hop flavours. In 2019 Greene King launched its first beer crafted by its brewing apprentices, Ice Breaker Pale Ale (4.5% ABV). The unfiltered pale ale is bursting with fruity hop flavour and emanates waves of guava and passion fruit which crash with big citrus flavours. The new offerings celebrate Britain’s wild flavours and eccentric past but are very much designed for the modern drinker. Targeting craft drinkers who enjoy flavour discovery with quality they can trust, the new range is designed to be enjoyed primarily by customers in relaxed premium drinking outlets, such as craft focussed bars, gastro pubs and quality sports clubs. Will Hemmings, Brewing & Brands marketing director, said: “Our new range of premium craft beers is inspired by Greene King’s 200-year heritage; but the recipes and tales have been reimagined for the modern craft consumer of today. The Bartenders’ Brand Awards are a unique blind tasting, design and value-tested competition for spirits, wines, beers and drinks products in the UK bar industry. Flint Eye, Level Head and Ice Breaker have all been awarded medals for the taste, design and value of the beers. The two new craft beers, designed for a modern-day drinker, are a homage to Greene King’s 200 years of brewing heritage and the historical myths and legends of Bury St Edmunds, the home of the Greene King brewery. Greene King is releasing its limited-edition Spring Break cask beer for March and April, which was created last year in collaboration with the National Brewing Apprentice Programme.

Cask beer is incredibly important to our history and as we try to drive consideration with a wider audience, by creating delicious and exciting beers, we also need to give teams on the bar the information to shout about the different styles and flavours we offer too. Providing our customers with tasting notes enables them to really educate themselves about the beer on their bar and get their guests excited too.” Light in body, but slightly dry with a medium bitterness and pithy aftertaste, this session IPA’s name hints towards the legend of St Edmund – the original patron saint of England from which Bury St Edmunds takes its name – who was beheaded by the Vikings in 869. Greene King has been awarded its first medals for its recently launched craft beers, Flint Eye and Level Head, and also Ice Breaker Pale Ale at the Bartenders’ Brand Awards this year. The awards land just ahead of the first anniversary of the launch of the brewer’s craft beers, Level Head, a session IPA (4% ABV), and Flint Eye, a dry hopped lager (4.5% ABV), which were launched in July last year and embody Britain’s eccentric past. The process of brewing craft beer is essentially no different to the process big name brewers use to produce beer. All beer, whether ale or lager, is brewed using four key ingredients: barley (or rye, wheat or another grain), hops, water and yeast. The main process is to extract sugars from the grains so the yeast converts it to alcohol and carbon dioxide. The flavour varies depending on the combination and type of grains, hops and yeast used, and on the quantities used.Level Head and Flint Eye are currently available in a number of Greene King pubs, which can be found here: https://www.greeneking-pubs.co.uk/premium-pint-finder/, and independent venues. The craft beers are also available in several major supermarket chains across the UK, including Tesco, Morrisons and Waitrose, and Sainsbury’s by the end of March. Lianne Bakdur, an apprentice brewer at Greene King who joined the brewing team last year after deciding to move from finance, is passionate about the opportunity seasonal cask ales can bring to the sector. Level Head is a session IPA that is light in body, but slightly dry with a medium bitterness and pithy aftertaste and has an aroma sitting somewhere between tropical and grapefruit notes. The Session IPA secured silver medals for taste and value at the awards, with a bronze medal for design.

Level Head, the new 4% session IPA which is Greene King’s other core beer, is a perfectly executed hoppy IPA which has an aroma sitting somewhere between tropical and grapefruit notes. Level Head is a session IPA that is light in body, but slightly dry with a medium bitterness and pithy aftertaste and has an aroma sitting somewhere between tropical and grapefruit notes. The Session IPA’s name is a nod to the legend of St Edmund, the brewery’s hometown’s Patron Saint, who was beheaded by Vikings in 869. St Edmund’s head was miraculously reunited with its body by a ghostly wolf and his sainthood was secured.

Using re-imagined recipes that draw on their 200 years of brewing expertise, Greene King has created a new dry hopped lager, a session IPA, a west coast IPA, and an oatmeal stout, which have all been inspired by myths and legends from Bury St Edmunds, where they have been brewing for centuries. Ice Breaker Pale Ale is currently available in over 1,500 Greene King pubs and independent venues, as well as major supermarkets including Tesco, ASDA, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Waitrose and Ocado. We’ve twisted and adapted traditional flavour profiles and channelled some of Britain’s colourful folklore to create authentic, modern, and exciting beverages, perfect for a new urban audience right across the UK.” Level Head, a session IPA (4% ABV), and Flint Eye, a dry hopped lager (4.5% ABV), will be available in cans in supermarkets across the UK from March.
