About this deal

We love making homemade play dough. Although this is the first time that we have make such a variety of colors all at once. It was a total hit with the kids. There is something about all the bright colors that just draws a person in (or maybe that was all the sparkly glitter). It feels like we are celebrating something. I may just need to pull out the party hats and make up something to celebrate. Heat and stir over low heat until the mixture becomes a cohesive mass, like gluey mashed potatoes. Let cool for a few minutes, then turn out onto a counter and knead until smooth. My kids love playdough and while we love the smell of store bought playdough, we usually prefer to make our own. From our Easter Carrot Playdough to our Grinch Playdough, this sparkly galaxy playdough has been added to our collection of fun modeling play. We found this idea over at The Kids Activities Blog, which is filled with fun activities for your kids! We decided we wanted to use our favorite playdough recipe to recreate this out of this world playdough.

With so many playdough recipe for kids it can be hard to decide which is the best homemade playdough. For our Galaxy Playdough we decided to use our soft play doh recipe as we had all the ingredients at home and with only 2 ingredients it is such an easy play dough recipe. It is a messy dough and will get on to your child’s hands. If they are tactile defensive then they may not like this type of playdough but its great for those who do seek extra sensory input and although it gets onto the hands it does not stain the hands with colour at all and is easily washed off. We made a well in the center of our dough, added food coloring, and then kneaded the dough until the color was thoroughly incorporated. Kids love squishing and mixing playdough colors. This is the perfect activity for that. I mean, what is a play dough rainbow if you can’t squish all the colors together? The swirls of color were simply beautiful.Playdough is a favourite sensory activity for many children and you can easily make your own homemade playdough recipes with a few simple ingredients! Making playdough at home is a great activity to do with kids and one that will provide them with hours of creative fun! A plastic container with a firm sealing lid is perfect for this. Be mindful that some playdough recipes may stain containers, so avoid using your best storage containers. Store your playdough in airtight containers or plastic ziploc bags for later use. We have found that our playdough can last up to a couple months if stored properly. If the playdough begins to dry out slightly you can add a touch of canola oil to your hands to mix and help smooth out. If the dough is stored properly, it will last up to 6 months. Store the dough in a plastic Ziploc bag and remove as much air as possible. This will help to prevent the dough from drying out. Playdough is a great creative play activity for toddlers and preschoolers, but just as much fun for bigger kids too!

Place the playdough on a piece of parchment or wax paper and allow to cool to the touch. Once it’s cool to the touch add your corresponding glitter to the playdough and mix until it’s fully incorporated. Simply mix it all together thoroughly and knead until you reach the right consistency for playdough. To make the dough a little firmer and more easily able to handle, we added about 3 spoons of cornflour. You need to mix this in very well – take your time with it.Both recipes are super simple and show you how to make playdough without salt. Also a great solution if you are looking for a uncooked playdough recipe. So, for our monthly craft, we decided to make our own play-dough. I’m so glad I committed to doing this and blogging about it, because I know for certain I would not have gotten around to this yesterday otherwise!

Uh oh, the kids left the playdough out too long or didn’t seal the container properly. Can you make hard playdough soft again? It is possible if it hasn’t completely dried out. It’s fun to play with the different textures and consistencies while this reaction is happening and you can can use it as a simple science lesson. (The salt does not dehydrate it but it breaks down the bonds in the polymers) You can see a more in depth explanation of this absorbtion experiment here We used some left over sweet wrappers to roll the gelli dough into balls and wrap them up. I also added some tinsel for a bit more colour and to add some extra sparkle. I acquired these vintage tins a while ago and I am completely in love. Although I only just recently discovered that they are the perfect size for pretend play. We are excited to have a few added to our play dough bin. Now on to our glittery rainbow play recipe! If using the plain sodium polyacrylate or insta snow then you will need to add your own colouring to the dough, whereas the Gelli Baff option does all that for you. You can use trial and error until you get the right consistency, if you add it slowly and keep observing and mixing as you add, then it should come out fine.

At any rate, once it’s all gluey and hard to stir, let the dough cool a bit and then dump it out onto your counter. Knead it to make a smooth dough, and then you can add color and glitter if you so desire. They’re very pleased with their new play-dough, partly because they made and designed it themselves, and partly because of the sheer volume the recipe produced. Only about half the dough is pictured below, and those two balls alone are probably the equivalent of 4-6 commercial Play-Doh cans.Glitter, glitter and more glitter (according to my kids) made this the best playdough recipe ever. You can never have too much glitter.
