About this deal

These Rice Krispie treats are cut out with a heart-shaped cookie cutter and then topped with frosting and sprinkles. They are adorable and deliciously gooey with the perfect ratio of marshmallows to Rice Krispie’s cereal. Adding the melted frosting and sprinkles puts these treats over the top! Different cultivars of rice have different ratios of starch, but the length of each grain is usually a good indicator of which way the ratio swings. The shorter the grain, the more amylopectin they typically hold, and the longer the grain, the more amylose. Tuna Mayo - Although it wasn't popularized until 7-Eleven started selling it in 1983, Tuna Mayo is now said to be the most popular filling for onigiri in Japan. It's made by mixing canned tuna with Japanese-style mayonnaise and soy sauce. You can get the recipe for my Tuna Mayo Onigiri at the link above.

Yaki Onigiri- Yaki Onigiri literally means grilled onigiri, and they were traditionally made by grilling rice balls over charcoal and basting them in a sweet and savory glaze. The high temperature crisps the exterior surface of the rice while giving it a wonderful toasty aroma. These days, most people make yaki onigiri in a frying pan, and I love finishing mine with a pat of butter and splash of soy sauce. Triangle - This is the most orthodox shape for onigiri, and I suspect it has to do with the fact that this shape is relatively easy to achieve with your hands. Tenmusu - Tenmusu is short for Tempura Omusubi, which is an alternate name of Onigiri. It's typically stuffed with a piece of shrimp tempura that has been soaked in a sweet and savory sauce.

Add Valentine sprinkles right into the Rice Krispie squares recipe instead of sprinkling them on top. Albeit this rice cooker is much much smaller than my original, but it’s a more high-tech style rice cooker. It also has many of the same functions that the old one did. If you know the basics, you’ll be able to make rice without breaking a sweat. The Rice Cooker Panel

When I first arrived in Japan, the company I was teaching for actually provided me with this industrial-sized, gargantuan, rice cooker (Suihanki or すいはんき(炊飯器)). Okay, maybe I won’t say industrial-sized, but it looked like it was big enough to feed between ten an fifteen people. Truthfully, I didn’t know the first thing about how to use my rice cooker because I had never done it before. Thank goodness for good friends/coworkers. My friend Robby was gracious enough to show me how to use my rice cooker, and now I think it’s only right to pay it forward. So let me show you how to use a Japanese rice cooker. These Heart Shaped Rice Krispie Treats are fun and festive Valentine’s Day treats that are just as fun to make as they are to eat! Using Japanese short-grain rice is the key to tender onigiri even after the rice balls have cooled to room temperature. Making good onigiri is mostly about the rice, how it's cooked, and how it's shaped, so it's essential to start with a type of rice that's well suited for making rice balls. First, it helps to understand that rice contains starch, and starch consists of amylose and amylopectin.Heart Shape Rice Cooker Smart 300W Rice Cooker 1.8L, Portable 6 in 1 Rice Cooker with Preset Timer And Thermostat,A [Energy Class A] Description Step 4: When you hear the signal (my rice cooker beeps several times), the rice is done. Open the lid and serve away! Konbu - Konbu is a type of kelp that can be thinly sliced and cooked with a mixture of soy sauce, mirin, and sake to make a flavorful condiment called tsukudani. This can be stuffed inside of an onigiri. Another preparation for konbu is to slice freshly harvested konbu into thin strips before salting and drying it. This is known as shio konbu, and it's also used as a filling for rice balls. Rice in Japan/Asia is as popular and as ubiquitous as bread is in to America. Odds are if you’re going to be living in Japan, you’re going to be eating more rice than you were accustomed to in the United States or your respective country. Rice is great because it’s incredibly easy to make, and I really think Asia has the best rice there is. I know that sounds weird, because rice is essentially tasteless. Once you’ve eaten enough of it, you start to notice subtle differences in the rice you eat. Rice goes great with A LOT of things. Miso soup, shabu shabu (which is like a Japanese stew), unagi, or just about any fish you can think of, all go great with a nice, steaming bowl of rice. Oishii!!
