About this deal

This is an older game that has recently received a reprint by Fantasy Flight Games. And by this you can be sure of one thing: great components! They have tokens for everything and plastic molds of other things that aren’t really needed. And now with a reprint of Hey, that’s my fish, it just proves my point further.

Shuffle all of the ice floe tiles and arrange them in the shape of a square with all of the tiles being arranged in rows. The rows should alternate between being seven and eight ice floes long. When laying out tiles you should try to evenly distribute the two and three fish tiles throughout the entire game board. Each player takes a set of penguins of one color. The number of penguins used in the game depends on the number of players:You’ll start the game by building the board. Turn the 60 hex tiles ice-floe-with-fish side up and arrange them in an agreed upon, symmetrical pattern. The recommended board shape from the rule book. And penguins get separated from each other and trapped on different bits of the ice, each trying to gather as much fish as possible while using the board-destruction mechanic to isolate the opponent’s penguins on small ice-islands. The design is simple and effective, but one frustrating aspect of the game is that players are required to remove tiles as they claim them. Often these tile are interior tiles, and they require care in lifting them without upsetting the other tiles. The other issue with the strategy in Hey! That’s My Fish is that it is the type of game that could suffer significantly from analysis paralysis. Since everything is out on the board, players can spend a lot of time trying to analyze what their best move is on every turn. There are so many possibilities early on in the game that players who try to look for an optimal play on every turn could take forever making their move. If you have a player like this you should consider including a time limit so players don’t take forever to make their move.

This changed Hey, That’s My Fish! from a simple, lighthearted game, into a strategic battle that I ponder over as much as I’ve ever studied a Chess board. Quantity of tiles is not the only important thing in Hey! That’s My Fish. Going after the more valuable tiles is usually even more important. For each three fish tile you get another player will have to collect three one fish tiles. It is unlikely that one player will get significantly more tiles than the rest of the players so if you don’t get many of the high value tiles you will probably not win. The ice is breaking up! Grab all the fish you can before they slip away. If you don't, another penguin will. It's every penguin family for itself. Set up involves laying the 60 ice floe tiles in rows creating “the board”. Then each player takes a turn placing their penguins on the tiles. After everyone’s penguins are placed, players take turns moving 1 penguin at a time in a straight line through the hex shaped ice floe tiles. Tiles are removed in each penguin’s wake leaving gaps as each player advances. Players can move their penguins as far as they want until they run into an opposing penguin or a gap in the ice floe. Then they are forced to stop.As I said before in my review for the hard copy version of Hey, That’s my fish! The game is simple and complex at the same time! The aim of the game is to move around a hex tile board, one penguin at a time with the aim of taking each tile you stop on away from the board and the number of fish thereon. Joy of joys, this is no longer the case! Pure digital toothyness awaits for a fantastically low price.
