About this deal

A GlamCam tab in the HP Command Center utility offers lighting correction and appearance enhancement as well as an auto-frame function that lets you move around the room a little during video calls, like Apple's Center Stage for iPads. An HP Enhanced Lighting app mimics a ring light, too. It was the second shortest time in our quintet, but the Envy's 13 hours and 39 minutes is plenty of battery life for a desktop replacement system. If you have to get through a full day of work or school without an AC outlet, it should be no problem. Of course, the Envy's OLED screen showed glorious color fidelity and brightness—a bit under its advertised 400 nits, but OLED's sky-high contrast makes that a nonissue. Our other three benchmarks focus on the CPU, using all available cores and threads, to rate a PC's suitability for processor-intensive workloads. Maxon's Cinebench R23 uses that company's Cinema 4D engine to render a complex scene, while Geekbench 5.4 Pro from Primate Labs simulates popular apps ranging from PDF rendering and speech recognition to machine learning. Finally, we use the open-source video transcoder HandBrake 1.4 to convert a 12-minute video clip from 4K to 1080p resolution (lower times are better). It absolutely holds its own against the more expensive 2-in-1's running an Intel Core i7-1165G7, like the HP Spectre x360 15 and the Lenovo ThinkBook 14s Yoga, beating them both in several areas like multicore performance, and costing much less as well. We test Windows PCs' graphics with two DirectX 12 gaming simulations from UL's 3DMark, Night Raid (more modest, suitable for laptops with integrated graphics) and Time Spy (more demanding, suitable for gaming rigs with discrete GPUs).

Like a number of ultraportables, the Envy x360 13.3 doesn't make it easy to connect an external monitor—you'll need a DisplayPort adapter for one of the two USB-C/ Thunderbolt 4 ports on its right side, since there is no HDMI port. (The AC adapter also has a USB-C connector.) We also run a custom Adobe Photoshop image-editing benchmark. Using an early 2018 release of the Creative Cloud version of Photoshop, we apply a series of 10 complex filters and effects to a standard JPEG test image. We time each operation and add up the total (lower times are better). The Photoshop test stresses the CPU, storage subsystem, and RAM, but it can also take advantage of most GPUs to speed up the process of applying filters. The tables were turned here as the Lenovo won handily, with the Envy turning in a decent but unexciting time. It's fine for image touch-ups and managing a photo collection, though serious content creators will probably want a 4K display. Graphics Tests Windows 10/MM14 Battery life will vary depending on various factors including product model, configuration, loaded applications, features, use, wireless functionality, and power management settings. The maximum capacity of the battery will naturally decrease with time and usage. See https://bapco.com/products/mobilemark-2014 for details.

All specifications represent the typical specifications provided by HP's component manufacturers; actual performance may vary either higher or lower.

The Envy's eight-core Ryzen 7 ran away with both of our CPU benchmarks, showing near-workstation levels of processing performance for programs that are designed to leverage all available cores and threads. The Yoga C740 finished far behind, its 10th Generation Core i7 trailing even the 11th Gen Core i5 of the Dell. We run the same general productivity benchmarks across both mobile and desktop systems. Our first test is UL's PCMark 10, which simulates a variety of real-world productivity and office workflows to measure overall system performance and also includes a storage subtest for the primary drive. The display features incredibly thin bezels, giving you a great screen-to-body ratio and allowing the Envy x360 13 to fit a 13-inch screen in an 11-inch chassis. With a 1080p resolution, movies and still images look amazing, even at extreme angles; even sitting nearly parallel with the screen, we still don't notice any washout of colors or polarizing effects. This means you won't have to worry about sharing presentation drafts or watching movies with friends and having someone miss details because of bad viewing angles. Best of all, it's included in the box. The same can't be said for more premium 2-in-1 laptops and tablets. The screen's brightness is ample but, as with other OLED rather than IPS panels, it's not necessarily impressive when measured in nits (candelas per square meter) by our test equipment. The Envy x360 15 also made short work of our Blender benchmarks, chewing through both Fishy Cat and Classroom renders in less than half the time as the ThinkBook 14s Yoga, making the Envy x360 15 a good option for creatives who are working with a really tight budget. Battery Life The performance setting is meant for when you're using programs and apps that can be taxing on your CPU to keep temperatures down for better processing times. Unless you're working with video and audio or complicated art programs like Photoshop or Illustrator, you'll rarely have to change from the recommended settings. Fan noise is never really an issue, even the performance and comfort settings are still quiet enough to not distract from movies, music, or work. The laptop also never got hot enough to cause alarm or warrant switching to the comfort fan mode, which was a relief since the slim and compact form factor was a concern for airflow.

For our benchmark charts, I matched the Envy x360 15 against its abovementioned 15.6-inch convertible competitors from Lenovo and Dell, as well as HP's more upscale Spectre x360 15. That left one slot, which I filled with a slightly smaller 2-in-1, the Asus VivoBook Flip 14. That one features a previous-generation (4000 Series) Ryzen processor. (See more about how we test laptops.) Productivity and Media Tests This year's model supports the IMAX Enhanced aspect ratio of 1.9:1, which shows a bit more of the top and bottom of a cinematic image and is mostly available for Marvel movies on Disney+. I can't imagine who would choose a 1080p rather than a 4K or other high-res laptop display for watching IMAX content, but the feature is available if you want it. We were also surprised to see how well the HP Envy x360 15's Radeon graphics handled both benchmarks and real-world use. No, you really won't be able to run the best PC games on the Envy x360 15, natively, and without issue, but we've played Valheim with worse specs, for sure. The main benchmark of UL's PCMark 10 simulates a variety of real-world productivity and content-creation workflows to measure overall performance for office-centric tasks such as word processing, spreadsheeting, web browsing, and videoconferencing. We also run PCMark 10's Full System Drive test to assess the load time and throughput of a laptop's storage. As for the included software, the HP Command Center utility includes a number of tools and apps. An HP Display Control menu lets you switch among default, sRGB, Adobe RGB, DCI-P3, and automated color modes or temperatures for the display. The one area where the Envy x360 15 fell short was in single core performance, where it scored 300 to 400 points less in Geekbench, PCMark 10, and other CPU single-core benchmarks against the Spectre and the ThinkBook 14s Yoga. That isn't unexpected though, since Intel processors typically do better in single core performance but – as was the case here – AMD's Ryzen processors blow their rival's Intel chips away by 2,000 to 3,000 points whenever multi core processing or integrated GPU performance is measured.

Welcome to the HP Community. This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries. I have reviewed your post and I understand, there's an issue with the HP Pen. Next is Maxon's CPU-crunching Cinebench R15 test, which is fully threaded to make use of all available processor cores and threads. Cinebench stresses the CPU rather than the GPU to render a complex image. The result is a proprietary score indicating a PC's suitability for processor-intensive workloads. After fully recharging the laptop, we set up the machine in power-save mode (as opposed to balanced or high-performance mode) where available and make a few other battery-conserving tweaks in preparation for our unplugged video rundown test. (We also turn Wi-Fi off, putting the laptop into airplane mode.) In this test, we loop a video—a locally stored 720p file of the Blender Foundation short film Tears of Steel Tears of Steel—with screen brightness set at 50% and volume at 100% until the system quits. The keyboard includes buttons to mute the microphone and disable the webcam, as well as the fingerprint reader (replacing the right Control key) and a special key to launch the HP Command Center software, which lets you prioritize favorite apps' network bandwidth; activate a Focus Mode that dims the display except for the active window; and choose balanced, quiet, or performance modes depending on your tolerance for cooling-fan noise. (I ran our benchmark tests in performance mode, except for the battery test in balanced mode.)
