About this deal

Obviously, peat does make a difference. The Machrie Moor 10 has a prominent note of a smouldering bonfire and there’s a taste of mango to it that I also get in other peated whiskies. The Arran 10, meanwhile, is strong on apples which I didn’t find in the Machrie Moor 10. The shortbread and the chamomile tea of the Arran 10 have been supplanted by the smoke and ashes, and I’m not entirely sure what to make of the Machrie Moor’s rubbery note. The Arran 10 seems more mature than its peated and slightly metallic sibling. The Arran 10 is well-integrated, the Machrie Moor 10 is not. In case of the Machrie Moor 10, the peat seems to have resulted in a wilder spirit that has not yet been tamed by its 10-year maturation. When it comes to Machrie Moor “regular” whisky, problems arise, at least in this 1st Edition before me. The peat seems forced upon a spirit that wilts under the strain, rather than embracing the phenols. We’re not even talking about heroic levels of peat–somewhere in the neighborhood of fourteen parts per million.

Machrie Moor is a peated single malt produced at Lochranza distillery in the north of the island. The brand has been around for about a decade. Since 2019, however, the only peated whisky produced on Arran has been at the new Lagg distillery in the south. Machrie Moor, it seems, will soon be a whisky confined to the history books. In other words, grab some now, before it disappears for ever.Without prejudice to the section Liability below, the Service may be temporarily unavailable during maintenance, updates, etc. We shall make reasonable efforts to inform you of any unavailability due to maintenance or updates. Since we’re on the subject, the March 23, 2015 bottling of Ardbeg 10 Year Old 46% ABV is one of the best in a long time. I took the liberty of sipping it side-by-side next to the 1st Edition Regular Machrie Moor 46% ABV whilst hammering out this review, and it won handsomely in all respects, including the price. The classic fresh Arran Single Malt character with a puff of peat smoke. This Single Malt produced at Lochranza Distillery is some of the original, very first peated Single Malt that we produced on the island.

On the west coast of the Isle of Arran lies a windswept and mystical peat bog called Machrie Moor. Bronze Age stone circles and standing stones are strewn across its barren, undulating terrain. One of the stone circles is known as Fingal’s Cauldron Seat, where sits a stone with a carved hole. The legendary warrior giant Fingal is said to have tethered his favourite dog Bran to this stone. This peated expression of the Arran Single Malt perfectly captures the rugged beauty and lore of the landscape. Unleash the legend that is Machrie Moor. At Machrie, the stones are situated below two steep-sided valleys on the skyline. At the summer solstice, the sun rises at the meeting point of the two valleys, suggesting some kind of spiritual significance to the Neolithic people that put them there.Records the default button state of the corresponding category & the status of CCPA.
