Turnbull and Gourlay (1987) proposed for the first time a computer-based method for visual impact analysis: the proposed software application was able to evaluate alternative structures (e.g., transmission line pylons) based on data collection, visibility, and visualization requirements. This application suffers strongly from limitations because of the computer graphics available in the eighties; to the authors’ knowledge, there have been no updates.

I won the first of my 13 British National Championships (seven as a pilot and six as a caller/mechanic). Friday morning turned out bright and sunny, with a repaired start-line scoreboard in place. We were all happy to get racing. Technical-functional suitability, that is, consistency with the technical specification and current legislation. With a new school year starting, getting a pylon up on the blog for September is always tough and with the middle of the month looming, I'd begun to think that it might not happen. Yesterday, however, I had a conversation with one of the students I teach and they mentioned that on the way to Heathrow fairly recently they had seen a line of pylons by the side of the motorway (so either the M4 or the M25). Immediately realising that it would be of interest to me they captured the view on their phone and you can see the result above. I don't have any more information that that, but thank you to the student for ensuring that September is not a pylon free month.

Friday, Day Four

I was introduced to pylon racing in 2007 and originally competed in the electric class F3E (then known as F5D). This culminated in attending the 2010 World Championships in Muncie, Indiana USA. Soon after this, I was introduced to F3D and teamed up with Dave Cline. Running all of Dave's equipment and with him as a caller we achieved much within the sport within the UK and internationally. Dave unfortunately passed away in 2020 leaving me some of his aircraft and engines. Together with good friend Geb Jones, we are looking to continue the work Dave started to progress within the sport. The propellers in both classes need to be very thin but also strong, and they are molded in carbon fiber. They have tip speeds in the supersonic region, and therefore need very special airfoils to be effective.

The pylon design must comply with the standards and rules established by the International Electro-Technical Commission (IEC). Furthermore, related national and international standards and legislation must be considered depending on the country where the pylons will be installed. Involving residents in the early design process as decision-makers can represent a measure that could improve the levels of acceptability of new structures.The literature analysis shows that, on the one hand, the focus of most of the studies, although recent, is the integration of the structural and morphological aspect, albeit limited to the conceptual phase, as a starting point for the following design phases. On the other hands, other studies including the entire design process have led to the development of new pylon designs that only partially complies with all the mandatory and aesthetical requirements. So, for example, some pylon designs are stopped at the conceptual phase as in Cotton and Devine-Wright (2013) for non-compliance with regulatory, safety, and the impossibility of its engineering. On the contrary, the new designs of installed pylons do not completely satisfy the guidelines for enhancing the visual quality. This paper presented a systematic method for designing pylons with improved visual quality to overcome these limitations. The suggested approach considers all possible requirements concerning the measures to enhance the visual quality, including regulatory, industrial feasibility, and social components. Regarding the last one, among all the results of the studies reported in the literature about the social and psychological factors that can influence the perception of visual impact, the following were taken into account since they are considered the most important ones: It’s a tough balancing act between going fast and gliding the last lap of the race or going the whole 10 laps at a slower speed. A perfect race is one where the limiter shuts off the motor just as the pilot crosses the finish line on lap 10. Ideally, you want to expend every one of those electrons available in your battery—but not too soon! Some competitors use a battery heater, which allows for a higher voltage output (more power) but less total duration. Top Czech competitors use a twin-blower, electric cooling motor attached to the nose of their models after each race.
