About this deal

The Motorola Edge 40 is an elegant Android phone that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed using for the duration of the review period, offering a svelte design, competent cameras, a long-lasting battery, and fast charging at a competitive price. Switching across to the ultrawide lens naturally sees a drop in picture quality due to the lower megapixel count, plus the colours are a tad muted and the low-light performance takes a serious hit. Who is the Motorola Edge 40 for?

As for my personal experience of reviewing phones, I've been writing about and reviewing mobile technology since 2014. Prior to joining TechRadar, I worked at Digital Trends in the mobile section, and before that I was at Android Central, writing about Android phones on a daily basis.ReadyFor delivers some of the best Windows 10/11 integration of any phone manufacturer in 2023, with the ability to get notifications, use Android apps and even use the Edge 40 Neo’s camera as a webcam, further expanding just how useful the phone can be in everyday use. The Classic Series 2.0 real leather flip wallet case cover by 32nd is designed exclusively for the Motorola Edge 40 Neo. Ensuring easy access to all your phones functions while maintaining its slim profile. Compromises are made elsewhere, scaling down the ultrawide lens from 50 MP to 13 MP, and losing the 2 MP depth sensor. The front still sports a 32 MP selfie camera. The Motorola Edge 40 runs Motorola's MYUX software, powered by Android 13. It's a very Pixel-like OS that's clean and unobtrusive.

It’s a similar story when it comes to graphics performance with a surprisingly decent experience on offer, handling basic titles like Survivor.io without breaking a sweat, and it can run 3D games like Call of Duty Mobile fairly smoothly as long as the graphics aren’t cranked too high. It stays surprisingly cool under load too, with no noticeable warm spots on the rear after 30 minutes of gaming. The camera setup, and the main 50MP sensor in particular, performs well considering its price point, capturing not only detailed, vibrant images in well-lit conditions but in low-light scenarios too. It’s not quite up to the level of flagships or even the mid-range Pixel 7a, but it’s one of the better implementations in the budget phone market. Our excellent collection of Motorola Moto Edge 40 covers all offer durable protection at a cheap price without compromising on style or usability. Whether you are looking for a tough heavy duty case to protect your device, or something more stylish that complements your phone we have a full range of sleek and stylish Motorola Moto Edge 40 covers that are sure to suit your preference. Our range of Motorola Moto Edge 40 are available in a huge variety of colours and designs making them a perfect present for any mobile phone aficionado. When it comes to photography, the Moto Edge 40 retains the 50 MP main shooter with optical image stabilisation and the same 1.55-inch sensor. It also switches from f/1.8 aperture to f/1.4, letting in more light but offering a slightly shallower depth of field. Overall, the Motorola’s Edge 40 design is aesthetically pleasing and well balanced, but you might want to give some thought to your choice of material, which in turn will dictate your choice of colors. In my time testing the phone, it was fast and responsive, with no lag. Whatever I was doing, I never once thought, "Hmm, this is annoying, I need more power." The Dimensity 8020 didn't call attention to itself at all – it just quietly got on with the tasks at hand without protest, and I consider that an admirable quality. All up, you still score plenty of premium features at a mid-range price point, with the added bonus of a longer battery life and IP68 ruggedness to help protect your investment. It’s a solid mid-range handset but, if your sights are set a little higher, wait to see what else the Edge 40 range delivers in the months ahead. While you won't be going multiple days without a charger if you use your phone intensively, you can get two to three days of light usage (think an hour or two of screen on time per day), or a comfortable full day of heavy usage, with a fast top-up to extend that to the next day. In second place, we have the Osophter Case for Motorola Edge 40 Pro. This product is made of high-quality TPU material and is easy to install. It features soft edges that won’t scratch your phone, and it is very flexible, comfortable, and slim. When using the Motorola Edge 40 Pro with this case, you won’t even feel its presence on your smartphone. The soft silicone sleeve perfectly fits your phone, and the precise cutouts allow for easy access to all ports and buttons without removing the protective sleeve.

Other than integrating it into my daily life as my main phone over the testing period, I also ran benchmarking apps to compare the Edge 40’s performance to other top Android phones. This included Geekbench 6, in which the Edge 40 landed an average single-core score of 1109 and an average multi-core score of 3578, as well as GFX bench. Battery life is another area where the Edge 40 Neo shines with a large 5000mAh cell powering the experience. That’s an increase of 920mAh compared to last year’s Edge 30 Neo that we had no complaints about, and even with a faster 144Hz display, it’s very much the case here too. When it comes to photography, that 50MP main shooter figure sounds impressive but we all know that megapixels aren’t everything. Thankfully, it also takes advantage of a larger sensor and pixels than Motorola’s budget models, resulting in crisp images with plenty of detail and good colours. It offers particularly impressive low-light performance. Performance is also surprisingly solid from the Dimensity 7030 chipset, likely aided by the plentiful 12GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage should be ample for most budget users. The Motorola Edge 40’s display measures 6.55 inches and it’s a Full HD pOLED panel with a 144Hz refresh rate, plus a small punch-hole selfie camera.Next on the list is the BLAVIC Armor Case for Motorola Edge 40 Pro. The inner surface of this case adopts a thin and durable soft TPU design. The outer surface features a textured and non-slip, scratch-resistant material that does not fade. The reinforced corners provide enhanced protection, while the raised edges safeguard the screen and camera, offering more effective overall phone protection. It can’t quite reach the lofty heights of 4K@60fps or even 8K@24fps, but the 4K@30fps video is more than enough for capturing the moment, and thanks to OIS, it’s relatively shake-free too. Performance Flip the phone over and you’ll find a high-res 32MP selfie camera with quad-pixel tech that more than suffices for casual selfies and video calls.
