About this deal

This is certainly one of the genres that suits this lens the best, but the focal length might not satisfy everyone. 75mm gives you an equivalent focal length of 150mm on 35mm format which is longer than the usual portrait focal length (85 or 105). It works very well in large spaces but if you are in a small studio or restricted environment, you might have more trouble creating enough distance between you and your subject unless you are doing head shots. This is a valid point, especially if you are considering this lens as your only portrait lens. The price is actually quite good value when such high optical performance is delivered. It can certainly give the Zeiss' and Leica's a run for their money.

These field experiences were immediately followed by equally satisfying portraits done in very uncertain and low light conditions. There are no switches or control surfaces on the lens other than the focus ring - all lens functions are controlled by the camera. There are no distance or depth-of-field scales, and no infrared index. The focusing ring is the only control surface on the lens - it is metal with raised ribs, about an inch wide, and has a nice tactile feel to it. Since Olympus micro-four-thirds cameras use a fly-by-wire system, the focusing ring will turn forever in either direction, offering no stops or resistance to let you know you have maxed out focus in either direction.I will use it for portraits and street-shooting, but also for detailed landscapes - even it is 75/150mm (FF)it is sometimes fine to use a small tele for parts of landscapes, and this lens will be amazing for this. In spite of the smaller Micro Four-Thirds sensor, this lens can deliver an enormously shallow depth of field. All apertures deliver creamy and seamless out of focus elements, resulting in the most beautiful bokeh in the micro four-thirds lens world. Naturally, being at the high end of Olympus’ M. Zuiko lens collection provides the 75mm f/1.8 with a quality build. Now that you can buy this prime lens at a good price (around 400 Euros for a mint condition item) on the second-hand market, you can verify the truthfulness of my statement. That said, it's not perfect. I desperately wanted the weather sealing of the PRO line of M.Zuiko lenses, I wanted the manual focus clutch of them as well, and for Pete's sake Olympus. The lens hood was NOT included and that is insulting. Optically, brilliant; but I feel like I was ripped off a bit with the insanely priced hood.

The Olympus 75mm f/1.8 was announced in May 2012 as one of Olympus’ M. Zuiko Premium lenses for the Micro 4/3 system. At the time of introduction, the 75mm f/1.8 was one of a kind in the Micro 4/3 world and no other lens matched the lens in terms of field of view, sharpness, or aperture. We use Imatest SFR (spatial frequency response) charts and analysis software to plot lens resolution at the center of the image frame, corners and mid-point distances, across the range of aperture settings and, with zoom lenses, at four different focal lengths. The tests also measure distortion and color fringing (chromatic aberration). The Olympus 75mm f/1.8 is a lens I pull out for concert photography, street photography, portraits, and sometimes nature photography. As can be seen in the above series of photos, this 75mm lens is sharpest wide open or stopped down to f/2.8. The results are stunning at f/1.8 and f/2.8, but nothing is dropped in quality until f/8.0 in my opinion. Granted, finding small discrepancies in sharpness has often baffled me, so take this for what it’s worth. you don't need Olympus to gather more light. I can say the same about Canon FF lenses, they need to gather more light, because last time I mounted one on my 4x5 they did not do sh*t...
