Similarly, the global spread of pulped/mashed paper shadows the paths of trade, war and cultural exchange taken by paper: from China over Asia, Arabia, North Africa and onto Spain and beyond, including to England where in the mid-18th century it acquired its contemporary name. Consequently, this ornamentation can be held partly to account for the fact that from the later half of the 19th century Papier-mâché’s star began to wane, on the one hand as the novelty of it faded, but for all as the fashion for japanning gave way to the more natural, subdued, ornamentation, if equally flowing, organic, expressive tastes of Art Nouveau.

This is a fun tutorial guide for all ages to making and styling papier mache sculptures. I liked the book's logical layout and the author's easy to understand writing style and instructions. It includes a good introduction with chapters covering tools and supplies, basic general techniques, and finishing instructions. The following chapters include 13 really appealing and colorful projects. The tutorials each have a description, tools and materials lists, and step-by-step instructions accompanied by clear full color photos of each step. Abrahams, Roger D (2006). Papier-mâché however never completely vanished, just became less popular, something for children and provincial artists, not for professional designers and architects; however, that is now changing and Papier-mâché, is once again being utilised in contemporary design, Pure Gold in Hamburg featuring projects such as Sandra Böhm’s Prei collection which adds kaolinite stone to the mix for increased stability and thus allows for Papier-mâché chair legs; or Mieke Meijer’s Newspaperwood, the natural, logical, and eminently elegant, successor to Henry Clay’s pasteboard.Columbia's New Observatory" (PDF). If you like the cover, too, then you will LOVE the contents.

The result of her method is a very strong, highly detailed sculpture that is almost completely hollow, yet amazingly strong because of the geometric shapes inside the sculpture, the type of glue she uses instead of flour and water paste, and her method of building up shapes with the paper mache. The history of using pulped/mashed paper to create objects is arguably as long as that of paper itself, and would, by all accounts, appear to have its origins in reusing paper scraps: over many centuries paper was a rare and valuable material, thus, and very sensibly, not one that was left to go to waste. In Persia, papier-mâché has been used to manufacture small painted boxes, trays, étagères and cases. Japan and China also produced laminated paper articles using papier-mâché. In Japan and India, papier-mâché was used to add decorative elements to armor and shields. A basic structure of wood, metal and metal wire mesh, such as poultry netting, is covered in papier-mâché. Once dried, details are added. The papier-mâché is then sanded and painted. Carnival floats can be very large and comprise a number of characters, props and scenic elements, all organized around a chosen theme. They can also accommodate several dozen people, including the operators of the mechanisms. The floats can have movable parts, like the facial features of a character, or its limbs. It is not unusual for local professional architects, engineers, painters, sculptors and ceramists to take part in the design and construction of the floats. New Orleans Mardi Gras float maker Blaine Kern, operator of the Mardi Gras World float museum, brings Carnival float artists from Italy to work on his floats. [14] [15] Costuming and the theatre [ edit ] If this was on account of some, perceived, commercial advantage, pressure from salesmen, or simply an unhealthy fascination with the process, is a matter for debate; what is clear is that by 1851 even contemporary commentators were starting to tire of it, or as one reads in the Reports of the Juries from the 1851 Great exhibition: “The Jury feel called upon to remark on the redundancy and inappropriateness of much of the ornament applied to the European specimens of Japan ware; and to direct attention to the better examples of this work from Japan and China, where it will be found that in the subordinate parts the ornament is kept subdued and simple, thereby giving more effect to the principle features” 3 But I did enjoy reading the book and the projects are truly great fun! They are definitely not boring, instead I was very curious about trying them, but alas I cannot. But they are adorable (like those birds, or that cheer team you could make (which I could definitely use)) or useful. I wouldn’t mind making a cute planter for my plants. Now that I got my own home my windows downstairs have all the plants and a cute planter would make everything even more fun!

Military uses [ edit ] Paper sabots [ edit ] The Schenkl projectile, used in the American Civil War, used a papier-mâché sabot Creating papier-mâché masks is common among elementary school children and craft lovers. Either one's own face or a balloon can be used as a mold. This is common during Halloween time as a facial mask complements the costume. [16] Make up a bowl according to the manufacturers instructions. Use a little less water than recommended if preferred. Keep in an airtight container. It will keep for several days in a fridge or a cool place. Wallpaper paste has the advantage of containing a fungicide to prevent mould. When you have decided which glue to use, the next thing to do is to decide what to make. To start is it advisable to use something to mould on.

Because I can’t see a finished sculpture so clearly in my mind as she does, I would not be as successful using her complete method. However, there are many things in her book that I’ll be including in my own work, especially the larger pieces that I’ve been thinking about lately. One thing I’ve noticed is that every book on paper mache has something in it that can be incorporated in my own work to make the process easier or stronger. (For instance, I used some of Dan Reeder’s methods to build my bobcat and lion cubs, but they don’t look anything like his monsters.)
