In the aftermath of the Cold War, many former spies have become freelance mercenaries, operating in a secret world of uncertain loyalties that’s more dangerous than ever before. Ronin tells the story of a group of these agents, who have been hired by an IRA operative to retrieve a mysterious briefcase from an unknown, well-armed party. The pay is premium and there’s only one condition—no questions asked. But there are problems. The briefcase is up for sale and the Russians want it badly. And when you can’t trust the other members of your own team, how can you possibly place your life in their hands? those interested can do side by side comparisons). On a beautiful summer day, the group then goes to work. After a wild car chase and several intense shootouts, the man with the metal case and the bodyguards protecting him are killed. Keanu Reeves' attempt to inject himself - and a whole load of CG fantasy - into an adaptation of the classic tale of the 47 Ronin proved a deeply flawed and misguided attempt to do something strikingly different. It is lovingly regaled in the De Niro film, Ronin, and has been adapted many times, with celebrated Japanese master actor and longtime Kurosawa collaborator Toshiro Mifune embarking on one of the best received interpretations. Robert De Niro, Jean Reno, and Natascha McElhone discuss the nature of the project and John Frankenheimer's directing methods. In English, not subtitled. (21 min). Interestingly, but perhaps not surprisingly given the above description, Ronin successfully builds an ambience that would have been perfect in a cinematic adaptation of a classic John Le Carre novel as well. Indeed, despite its contemporary appearance, the environment in which the drama unfolds very much reminds of the Cold War playgrounds Le Carre routinely recreated in his novels. In fact, De Niro's character reads each new situation as a fragment of precisely that kind of Cold War playground where everything is theater controlled by semi-visible and invisible puppet masters. little to no signs of an aging director.
