This is a slow burn of a read. There's an overall feeling of dread looming over the narrative. I kept waiting for the inevitable, unable to predict where the tale was heading. Shadow Girls’ is a strange, poignant novel which begins as a straightforward exploration of teenage girls’ lives in the 1960s but becomes much more. The author Carol Birch plays with genres and timelines, with perspective and with our expectations.
