About this deal

Once they were able to talk to each other again, they both felt very happy. Kenna also helped Skandar and his quartet to save The Island. Skandar certainly agreed with that. When he’d first arrived on the Island, Skandar had believed there were only four elements: fire, water, earth, and air. But after Scoundrel had hatched, it had become clear that they were allied to an illegal fifth element—the spirit element—just like the Weaver. With a lot of help from his quartet, Skandar had managed to pretend he was a water wielder for most of his first year. The truth had come out eventually, though, and now that everyone—other than Kenna and Dad—knew he was allied to the so-called death element, whispers followed him along every swinging bridge and up every ladder. It was going to be a long time before the Eyrie trusted a spirit wielder. Flo’s mother, Sara, encourages the kids not to give into the bullies and says, “So the people with the power don’t like spirit wielders. What if they decide they don’t like healers next? Or saddlers? Or riders with flaming hair? Nothing gives the Silver Circle the right to abuse their power.” (p. 100) Write an opinion essay about why we should stand up to bullies who are trying to abuse their power. It can be political, about world or national affairs, or it can be personal, about people or kids in your own community. In the second book, Alastair even goes to lengths to say that Skandar is actually helping the Weaver (although that was false) and tried to turn other riders against Skandar.

The next morning, whilst in the Earth training ground, Amber and the Threat Quartet rode up to the Quartet and Bobby noticed Amber's star mutation, saying, 'you've got something gross on your head'. Amber then makes fun of Skandar for wearing his mum's scarf and she boasts about how her father died 'heroically in a fight with about a hundred wild unicorns', she then calls him pathetic and rides away, followed by the rest of her Quartet. Instructor Webb announced that they would be learning about sand shields that would be useful in sky battles before showing them how to do it. Skandar tried to summon the Earth element but Scoundrel resisted and kept trying to summon Spirit, eventually Scoundrel went wild and threw Skandar off of him. Instructor Webb walked over and saw something on Skandar's arm, a spirit mutation, but he just thought it was a burn. Suddenly, Joby grabbed Skandar and told Instructor Webb that he must go to the Healer treehouses immediately. A dazzling feat of imagination. I loved every breathless moment of it!’ – Cat Doyle, author of The Storm Keeper’s Island and co-author of Twin Crowns Steadman has a vast imagination, her world-building is a joy, the battle scenes are thrilling and her characters charm.' - The Times Children's Book of the Week Kenna’s life changed dramatically during the summer solstice of her 13 th Birthday. As she was a Spirit Wielder, unknown to anyone at the time, she was immediately disqualified from trying the hatchery door, and thus denied her destined unicorn. This sent Kenna into a solid depression where she would often mope around quite a lot and close up whenever someone mentioned unicorns. Never have unicorns been so ferocious, fearsome and thrilling! A fantastically gripping read!' - Laura Ellen Anderson, author of Amelia Fang and Rainbow Grey

Advance Praise

My book of the year. Not since Harry Potter have I felt this excited about a series. Readers are sure to be clamouring for the next book. You’ll never look at unicorns the same way again, nor will you want to!’ – Dominique Valente, author of the Starfell series The tour ended down by the Hatchling stables, Skandar, Bobby, Mitchell and Flo discussed what to do the next day when Skandar crossed the Fault Lines because since he was a Spirit Wielder all the lines would ignite, they had to cause a distraction. My book of the year. Not since Harry Potter have I felt this excited about a series. Readers are sure to be clamouring for the next book. You'll never look at unicorns the same way again, nor will you want to!' - Dominique Valente, author of the Starfell series Intrigued? Well read on to discover the synopsis and an excerpt for A.F. Steadman’s Skandar and the Phantom Rider, which is out May 3rd! Bobby propped herself up on her elbow. “I thought this was a picnic. Isn’t eating sandwiches exactly what you’re supposed to do?”

As the thirteen year-olds kept on walking, there was a bedazzling unicorn display although Skandar didn't appreciate it as he was still conflicted about the Spirit Element. At the end of path, there was an enormous tree, the leaves were a mixture of different colours, deep red, cornfield yellow, emerald green, sea blue and a few whites. On both sides of the tree were giant walls with plants surrounding them, similar to the Great Barrier Reef. When the sentinels opened the entrance, Flo welcomed him and they all looked around at the armoured trees and towering treehouses. There were shouts from the bridges of treehouses, shouts of 'There she is!' and 'Look, new a silver!'. Flo then explained that the Eyrie was built around the Divide because it helped their unicorns reach their full potential. Epic, unforgettable and endlessly exciting, Steadman’s masterful sequel soars even higher than her debut.' – Aisling Fowler, author of the Fireborn series Robert is Kenna's father. Even though Robert is apathetic most of the time, he stills loves his daughter and son dearly. He cares about them and wants the best for Kenna and Skandar. Yet how is that meant to happen when a bard sings a true song that spells doom and destruction for the Eyrie and everyone on the island – oh it just so happens to implicate Skandar. That’s the last thing he needs, it’s not like everything doesn’t hate him enough or isn't scared of him now is allowed to openly train using his chosen elemental power. There was nothing. Every child who turned thirteen before the summer solstice was required to take the Hatchery exam. It was in the Treaty. It was the law. Though, apparently, that hadn’t applied to Skandar. Kenna was ashamed of the unkind thoughts that filled her head. How she had always been stronger, faster, cleverer. She’d helped raise Skandar; she would have known if he was exceptional. And—although she loved him very much—he wasn’t. He’d always needed her. And that had to mean Skandar was hiding something.Kenna is Skandar's older sister. They get along very well; Kenna always defended Skandar from bullies when he wasn't able to stand up for himself. They both love Chaos Cup and are interested in the riders. Kenna is confused at first but very taken in by Dorian’s words as they were her heart’s desires for a long time.

However the unicorn is forced to flee when The Weaver, Kenna’s Mother Erika arrives and explains to her about who she is and about Skandar. Although Flo describes herself as quiet, reserved and not so brave, when it comes to helping Skandar, she always lands a hand to him. A. F. Steadman has created a stunning new world that feels both familiar and fresh, with a cast of characters that will stay with you long after you’ve finished reading.’ –Tọlá Okogwu, author of Onyeka and the Academy of the SunKenna is a young girl with beige skin, long brown hair and brown eyes. Her height is not specified although she may be tall. It is said that she looks very similar to her younger brother Skandar, to the point that they're mistaken for twins even though Kenna is older. Skandar and her mounted Swan and began a flight, which Skandar found quite uncomfortable. During the journey, they passed over the White Unicorn and saw many Mainlanders going to take helicopters to the Island. Skandar thought of Kenna, and this life she would never have, and also of writing to her if he opened the Hatchery Door. Can you believe training starts again in a few weeks?” Flo said nervously as she watched her unicorn, Silver Blade, drinking from the river a few meters ahead of them. The unicorn peered down at her rider to ensure she removed it all. “What’s the point of having a saddler’s daughter as a friend if she won’t spill any secrets?” Pretend you’re an Island travel agent, and write a brochure describing all the things to do and see in an elemental zone of your choosing from the Island.

Now wild unicorns are mysteriously turning up dead - something that is supposed to be impossible. Skandar and his friends work together to stop the impending doom that is hurtling towards them and the Eyrie – yet the more they find out the more it looks like The Weaver is behind it all.
