About this deal

While one could be used on shore power, their physical size means many smaller boats won’t realistically have space to stow one for occasional use. Methylated Spirits also known as Denatured Alcohol is the best Alcohol Fuel for your Spirit Burner. Ethanol Alcohol should be the primary Alcohol as it produces more heat but more soot. Methanol produces less heat and is more toxic. Look for BioEthanol as the best fuel for your Alcohol burner. Bond, Alexander Russell (1921). Scientific American Monthly. Scientific American Publishing Company. pp.251–. Producing Heat by Catalysis (Translated for the Scientific American Monthly from La Nature (Paris), December 25, 1920. - Flameless Stove Used by the French Army During the War - By R. Villers Sterno: aka canned heat, is made from denatured and jellied alcohol and is burned directly from its can. Popular Science". The Popular Science Monthly. Bonnier Corporation: 154–. June 1965. ISSN 0161-7370. Therm'x Explorer 57C

It is provided with a screw cap, which will seal the unit and any remaining fuel for transportation. (Not long term storage) Ethanol will be your best bet as fuel for your alcohol stove due to its heat output, which is less toxic. It will produce soot on your pans which can be reduced by adding water to your fuel. Remember that adding water to your fuel will reduce the heat output as you are burning Alcohol and water. Gas cookers used to be the standard choice on almost every boat, but there are good reasons why they are not necessarily the best boat cooker. Kerosene:Avoid using kerosene in your spirit burner as it produces terrible smoke and lots of soot on your pans and stinks when burned. The heat output on kerosene is low, so it will take a long time to boil your water.

Methanol is toxic (a potential cause for concern which we discuss later on) making this the only real downside to this fuel. L. Haney, "Camping in Comfort: A Guide to Roughing It with Ease and Style", p. 90 (McGraw-Hill 2007) Denatured alcohol: ethanol with additives likemethanol that make it toxicto drink, it'sthe most popular and widely available fuel for alcohol stoves; you probably won’t know the percentage of ethanol it contains. It still contains methanol so you absolutely would not want to consume it and should avoid inhaling the fumes, but from a chemical composition standpoint it’s not as toxic.

HEET is basically pure methanol, however, and methanol is toxic. It can enter the bodyby ingestion, inhalation, or absorption through the skin. These stoves look and even sound a bit like pressurized burner stoves, but the fuel tank is under no pressure. They remain popular for small boats owing to the minimal fire risk they pose in a confined space. Using a flint and steel it is easy to light, and I've found a good puff will blow it out (although this isn't approved by Trangia). Failing that and inverted mug will starve the flame of Oxygen. We used masking tape to prevent scratches and help with measurement and marking. Note that the measured centre line and centre of gravity are not the same
