St. Anthony, guide of travelers, bring to safe harbor those who are in danger of perishing and calm the troubled waves of passion which agitate our souls.

St. Anthony of Padua is one of the most popular and beloved saints in the Church—and surely one of the busiest! Legend has embellished this story slightly. It depicts a horrible devil stopping the novice in his flight, brandishing an ax and threatening to trample him underfoot if he does not immediately return the book. Obviously, the devil would never command anyone to do anything good. However, the core of the story appears to be true. The stolen book is rumored to be kept in the Franciscan friary in Bologna. In any case, shortly after Anthony's death, people began praying through him to find or recover lost or stolen items.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. He was then appointed as the first Franciscan friar with the duty of teaching theology to the other friars. Later he was sent to preach to heretics who were spreading false doctrines far and wide, and he often converted from their erroneous path. His zeal, oratory skill, and many conversions won him the title "Hammer of Heretics." His brilliance made him the foremost preacher in his day. After all, we had tasked him for generations with intentions great and small, and never once had he failed to intercede.

Saint Anthony was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1195 and became known as Saint Anthony "of Padua" because he founded a convent near that Italian city where he spent the last years of his life. He died near Padua in 1231 when he was just thirty-six years old. Recognized as a great man of prayer and a great Scripture and theology scholar, Anthony became the first friar to teach theology to the other friars. Soon he was called from that post to preach to the Albigensians in France, using his profound knowledge of Scripture and theology to convert and reassure those who had been misled by their denial of Christ’s divinity and of the sacraments. After he led the friars in northern Italy for three years, he made his headquarters in the city of Padua. He passed away in 1231, and was canonized less than a year later. Some famous stories from St. Anthony’s life are that he once was preaching, and many fish gathered around his feet at the edge of the water. To the people around him, he told them that the fish were more receptive to his words than they were.
