Star Wars was shot using a combination of Arriflex 35-III, Panavision PSR R-200, Panavision Panaflex X and Panavision Panaflex cameras on 35mm film, and has been newly scanned with 4K resolution for this release. It should be noted that the latest ‘Special Edition edit’ has been the source for this scan, it therefore contains much of the colouring inherent to that release. The disc presents a native 3840 x 2160p resolution image in the widescreen 2.39:1 aspect ratio, and uses 10-bit video depth, High Dynamic Range, and is encoded using the HEVC (H.265) codec for HDR10. We reviewed the Region free UK Ultra HD Blu-ray release of Star Wars on a Panasonic 65DX902B Ultra HD 4K TV with a Panasonic DMP-UB400 Ultra HD Blu-ray player. The republic of Naboo battles the Nimoudian federation; Darth Vader is a 9 year old boy named Anakin Skywalker, and Obi Wan Kenobi is a brash young Jedi knight. Rey and Kylo Ren battling it out on the ruins of the Death Star beside monstrous seas is also a treat for the eyes and the ears.Clone Wars rage across the galaxy. And this goes for all 4K discs – they will always offer higher quality than their streaming version even though they have the same 4K resolution. The UHD disc reviewed comes as part of the ‘Skywalker Saga’ set which is a lavish box set and included is a collector’s book, that houses all the discs (careful as you remove them!), two Blu-rays, one with the film, the other loaded with extras and a letter from Mark Hamill himself. The UHD has no extras itself. If you’re a veteran fan of Star Wars or a beginner looking for a good place to start, this is the perfect place to build your collection of Star Wars Blu-rays, DVDs, and box sets. Blu-ray (top) v 4K We already knew that Disney's streaming service was going to launch with an entire slate of Star Wars films – including the all-new The Mandalorian TV show – but it's come as a complete surprise to find all the films (prequels, sequels and spin-offs included) streaming in 4K with the premium Dolby Vision HDR format supported. Also on 4K UHD for the first time is Star Wars Episode VII – The Force Awakens along with Rogue One which is set just before the original 1977 Star Wars film in the story’s timeline.
Before you ask, yes, sadly, it's the George Lucas tweaked Special Editions of the original trilogy, so you'll have to blink at just the right moment if you still want Han to shoot first. A streaming service uses higher compression and lower bit rate to reduce the file size to make it easier to stream. But this is a treat – until this point, only the newer movies The Force Awakens, Rogue One, The Last Jedi and Solo: A Star Wars Story have been made available in 4K, and none offered the premium Dolby Vision viewing experience. Unfortunately, Rogue One, Solo and Episode VIII: The Last Jedi aren’t yet on the new service.Give me a The Mandalorian Collector’s Edition with a full-sized Baby Yoda included in the price and I’ll happily bite your hand off for it!
