It has been particularly aimed at adults with an intellectual disability (learning disability) or older children with special needs. It was developed by Alex Kelly who worked in a FE college with a large number of young adults with intellectual disabilities. After a year of social skills interventions, using pre and post assessments, she noticed a pattern in who was responding and who wasn't, centred around the hierarchy of self-awareness coming before non-verbal skills and non-verbal coming before verbal and assertiveness coming last. Alex developed an intervention based on this hierarchy that was published after extensive testing and piloting. Suitable for Speech and Language Pathologists, Teachers, Social Workers, Child Psychologists and School Counselors, Talkabout for Teenagers has been thoroughly updated and edited for a US audience. This resource continues to use the Talkabout hierarchical approach to teaching skills, that is, basic self-awareness skills are taught prior to more complex skills such as social skills and friendship skills. This also means that this resource is designed to be used logically from topic 1 through to topic 8. Most of the activities are more suited to working in a group setting but some of them can be adapted for one-to-one work. Suitable for all ages: the different books are designed with a certain population in mind, so that you will use the resource best suited to your client group, from young children (4+) to adults.

Includes an assessment and outcome measures: the Talkabout assessment includes a method of quantifying results and if you attend Alex’s training, she gives you additional systems to measure effectiveness through using targets and spreadsheets.
