About this deal

First to appear is Monty Oxymoron to play the slow, haunting, piano introduction Beauty of the Beast. A huge gantry has been erected on the stage tonight, designed to look like the pillared entrance to a cavernous tomb. A sweeping staircase rises up one side to where Pinch, the band’s drummer, will take his position this evening for the last time.

We are delighted by a fluid blend of music, performance and cinematic imagery. There is the gothic violin duel, the ventriloquist dummy singing on Dave’s knee, before jumping off and running away, the murder of the man from Guinness. Quite literally, our cup runneth over with blood, gore and gags. In directing, Martin Gooch relies on customary forms of the concert film: cameras capture a long shot of the stage in full, along with close-ups of Captain Sensible stage right, Paul Gray on bass and Monty Oxymoron on keys stage left, and Pinch on drums up above. Yet Gooch scatters traces of the classic horror genre throughout — the film, like The Damned, is never just one thing. Songs performed on the night but not included on the album and in the film are " New Rose", " Smash It Up", " Nasty", and " Shadow of Love". [15] Concert film [ edit ]The Damned transform London’s Palladium into a work of silent horror cinema, infused with the punk ethos that brought the band to life and the vampiric aesthetic that has sparked their live performances for decades. Sensible, much loved for his gobby banter, appears almost deferential this evening which allows Vanian to truly shine. The frontman long ago perfected his Vampire stage persona. And tonight, as he elegantly ascends and descends the gantry, cape flying, eyes flaming, his sharpened teeth bared, we see the full repertoire of his well-practiced movie mannerisms in all their glory. Inside the Palladium as the band begins to play, the film shifts to colour, tinted with cool blue and disquieting green lighting, as if you might be watching a painstakingly hand-coloured print of Louis Feuillade’s Les Vampires (1915-1916). A camera is positioned to capture a long shot of the stage, a quite literal horror tableau vivant if you were to press pause. With Pinch positioned above the stage on drums, I’ve got to imagine Gooch, Vanian, and the rest of The Damned were thinking specifically about those silent film tableaus created by directors like F.W. Murnau. But A Night Of A Thousand Vampires couldn’t be mistaken for silent cinema: The Damned fill the Palladium with sounds to wake the dead.A Night Of A Thousand Vampires` was a well thought out and executed occasion and watching this show was a totally immersive experience both visually and aurally and really made me feel saddened that i`d not actually attended the event.

Alan is wearing hooded cape. His first Damned gig was at The Barrowlands in 1988. He and Lorna, his gothic vampiress have just arrived from Glasgow. Adrian and Lara from York are dressed as The Count and Bride of Dracula. They first saw the band in Belfast in 1987. Starting over 25 years ago, Carl and Sarah from Newcastle have seen the band “Over fifty times”. While the fanged Ann and Tina just down from Wakefield, say they love “All of them”, when I ask for their favourite Damned album. a b c d Moore, John (27 October 2022). "New Noise Magazine Review". The band has asked everyone to help them set a Guinness World Record for having the most vampires assembled in one place. And virtually everyone is in costume. It also becomes apparent that many, if not most people have travelled great distances for A Night of a Thousand Vampires in this Grade 2 listed theatre in London’s West End. a b c Lanham, Tom (28 April 2023). As I scribble notes, a tall blond woman with fangs and blood dripping for her mouth interrupts me. Her friend has pushed her into approaching us to be included, and have their photos taken too, she tells us. Her name is Philippa, she has also seen them over fifty times, “Starting at Reading Uni when I was sixteen. I fainted in the crush and got dragged out, I’d do anything for The Damned.” She laughs, “Well within reason.” She is an art director who worked for four years on Game of Thrones as well as Dark Crystal. “I placed a Damned poster on Ashes to Ashes,” she says proudly. She’s talking about the BBC cop series. “I was in the art department,” she says. It’s starting to dawn on me, they are fanatical, all of them. What is it about The Damned that has created such fanatics? Just out in time for Halloween is this live show from The Damned, recorded in 2019. The live album is accompanied by a feature-length video with some lovely production. More than just a video of a run-of-the-mill gig, The Damned really pulled out the stops for the performance itself as well as this DVD release. On October 28, 2019, the legendary goth punk band The Damned played a Halloween themed show at London’s legendary Palladium Theatre. Billed as A NIGHT OF A THOUSAND VAMPIRES, the band churned through a remarkable set that was heavy on some of their darker, goth material naturally.Chart performance [ edit ] Chart performance of Blu-ray edition of A Night of a Thousand Vampires: Live in London Chart (2022) Following their formation in 1976, The Damned became the first UK punk band to officially release a single, “New Rose”, and an album Damned Damned Damned. With 10 studio albums and several UK charts singles, the band are pioneers who emerged from the London punk scene, earning an ever-expanding fan base fueled by legendary live shows. I’m wondering how hot it must be for Dave, still in the coffin, as Pinch declares among his long list of thanks –“Dave Vanian, without whom all of this would not have happened”. As musicians The Damned are now possibly at their peak, and this is shown by two fine renditions of classic songs, The Doors’ People Are Strange and Bauhaus’ Bela Lugosi’s Dead which creeps out in a medley in the middle of Neat Neat Neat.
