About this deal

The incredibly fancy (and, truth be told, a little more expensive) Steelbook format is the only choice for those needing a physical media release that doubles as a table tennis bat in a pinch. If that's you, [...] This release contains a decent selection of extras, starting with a pair of audio commentaries on the 4K and Blu-ray discs. The first one edits together a series of interviews with the director and some of the cast and crew, while the second features Henry Hill and former FBI agent Edward McDonald. Next, as usual for ToC releases, is an exclusive, themed pin badge. Once again this is well designed, and feels solidly built. Thanks to the kind folks at the UK Warner Bros store, we were able to get an early look, so let’s dive in…

When it comes to classic gangster movies, there are basically two that always top the list – The Godfather (ok, maybe The Godfather Part 2), and Goodfellas. This new release gives you the movie in 4K, with a transfer taken from a 4K scan of the camera negative, and spruced up with a dash of HDR. The transfer here is not groundbreaking by any means, but is still a decent upgrade over the Blu-ray. As with the image, look elsewhere if you want some demo material show off your home cinema, but if you want a faithful presentation of a primarily dialog-driven movie, you’ve got it here. Sounds from the Cold – Interviews with Supervising Sound Editor David Lewis Yewdall and Special Sound Effects Designer Alan Howarth (14:53, 1080p)s U-571 is coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK this September, with extra features too: more details here. The dedicated bonus Blu-ray disc, carried over from the 2015’s 25th Anniversary release, includes a good selection of documentaries, totaling over 3 hours. Behind the Chameleon: The Visual Effects of THE THING – Interviews with Visual Effects Artists Peter Kuran and Susan Turner, Special Make-up Effects Artist Rob Burman, Brian Wade and Stop Motion Animators Randall William Cook, and Jim Aupperle (25:26, 1080p) This release of Mad Max Fury Road is the third to come from the Titans of Cult label, following on from Blade Runner and Wonder Woman.

DISC TWO: 2016 2K Scan of the Interpositive (1:48:34) Supervised and Approved by Director of Photography Dean Cundey The discs inside the steelbook will be the existing discs from Universal 2021 4K UHD+ Blu-ray releasesUniversal when they get delivery of the steelbook/Slip/Pin etc from Scanavo will then put inside the the steelbook their existing discs and then skrink wrap the release and ship to retailers Dialog is still clear above all the mayhem, and in the few quieter moments, the mix shows a lot of subtlety. Meanwhile, Junkie XL’s score keeps things moving at a tremendous pace, and is equally immersive, making full use of all the speakers in your setup.

Previous Titans of Cult releases have included posters, drinks coasters, and even a second, mini Steelbook, but this time round we something very different – Mama Scorsese’s meat sauce and meatball recipe, which really couldn’t be more on-brand. The Criterion Collection confirms that Ridley Scott's Thelma & Louise is getting a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release in the UK. The star of the show is naturally the 4K version. While based on a 2K DI, upscaled to 4K, the image on this disc shows a huge amount of detail. Fine textures like wear and tear on the vehicles and clothing come through well, while the HDR provides a great boost to the already vibrant colour palette, along with bright, but never blown-out highlights, and impressive shadow detail. Fury Road was one of Warner’s initial 4K launch titles in early 2016, but the transfer still holds up today, and is a great example of how the format can improve over an already great Blu Ray transfer.

Vintage Featurettes from the Electronic Press Kit Featuring Interviews with John Carpenter, Kurt Russell, and Rob Bottin (13:20, 480i) If a new 4K UHD disc is later done by a distributor with new extras and got a general release it would be upto the distributor themselves if they decide to use a new 4K UHD disc or use a previous 4K UHD disc in a Titans of Cult release Obviously the star of the show is the new and exclusive artwork and once again it suits the title perfectly. There’s no embossing or debossing this time round, but the shirt and tie parts of the artwork catch the light nicely. Compared to previous Titans of Cult releases, it’s certainly not the most arresting artwork we’ve seen, but it’s classily understated, and certainly fits with the film’s style. Vintage Product Reel – Contains a Condensed Version of the Film with Additional Footage Not in the Film (19:38, 480i)The same will apply to any other film studio distributors that later come part of Titans of Cult range of releases those distributors must have an existing 4K UHD disc available to use The Titans of Cult series of collectors edition steelbook releases got off to a great start with Blade Runner and Wonder Woman, and now the third release is with us – the epic Mad Max: Fury Road. Based on a true life story, Goodfellas follows Henry Hill, who works his way up from being a teenage errand boy for the Brooklyn mob, to becoming a leading figure in organized crime in New York. As a Titans of Cult release, the film marks a huge – but nonetheless welcome – shift away from the type of genre movies that have been released by the label so far.
