You might be tempted to leave out the spices but although the flavor is subtle, they do add a lovely complexity to this jam so I would recommend using them. Keep in mind that most of the old town is a ZTL — zona traffico limitato, or limited traffic zone, which means that you won’t be able to drive within the city. The recipe calls for Tropea onions, which are an amazing sweet onion from Calabria, but if you cannot find Tropea onions, Domenica suggests using any firm, young red onion. The recipe calls for Sangiovese or another full-bodied red wine, and I used Sagrantino, which is Umbria’s best known full bodied red. Old Tropea sits on a chalk cliff overlooking the sea and the nearby beaches. It really is a fabulous spot to take the whole area in.

Lastly, it's important to know that although Calabria as a region is very much lesser explored by Brits, Europeans and North Americans, Tropea is the exception to this. Numbers are of course absolutely nowhere near the levels of Cinque Terre, the Amalfi Coast, and Sicily, but it was the most surprising aspect for us. Red onions (also known as purple or blue onions in some mainland European countries) are cultivars of the onion ( Allium cepa), and have purplish-red skin and white flesh tinged with red. They are most commonly used in cooking, but the skin has also been used as a dye. [1] However, Lamezia Terme Airport doesn’t have a ton of direct flights outside Italy; the day I left, the only flights were within Italy. (These may be reduced at the moment due to COVID.) Connections via Milan are probably the easiest if coming from outside Italy.The onions are equally delicious on bruschetta with extra virgin olive oil, served with beans, or baked or fried into a frittata omelet with potatoes – a typical Easter lunch dish in the area. Being Italy, you'll also find various cars parked up illegally along the roadside, but we don't recommend doing that with your rental car.
