About this deal

One of the main advantages of non-woven membrane is that it doesn’t fray when it’s cut, so exposed edges won’t disintegrate over time. It’s also permeable, often more so than woven weed membrane, and will let moisture reach the soil below. Weed control membranes can also be used vertically to keep roots of plants at bay; to stop them spreading out of a certain area. This can be achieved by using a non-permeable membrane as a barrier. Erosion Control Like most woven weed membranes, it is prone to fraying, so when cutting the fabric you’ll need to leave a little extra. This extra fabric can be folded under the edges to limit how much it frays. GardenGloss® 50m² Non Woven Weed Control Fabric Heavy Duty (150gsm) - Water Permeable and Tearproof Weed Barrier Fabric - UV Resistant (50m x 1m, 1 roll)

Whilst stopping weeds growing through, it is still permeable to water. This allows plants that are protected by the membrane to benefit from rain water, and also means that water does not pool on the top of the fabric. To maintain the health of the soil beneath, the fabric is permeable. Water and nutrients can reach through, even though weeds won’t be able to grow. Therefore, it won’t ruin the ground beneath whilst the fabric is in place. Weeds are the bane of gardeners’ lives and are especially a problem on any bare areas of soil, such as veg beds, left empty over winter. One downside of this fabric is that it can fray where it has been cut, so the best thing to do is allow for an extra 10 – 15 cm when cutting. This makes it possible to fold the fabric under at the edges, which will stop fraying edges from being visible.

Both versions cut well but woven versions tend to fray around the edges which could look unsightly if not properly covered with a mulch. How to lay directly underneath gravel? Not necessarily. If wanting to mulch with bark and wood chips then a generous layer (7 – 10cm deep) placed directly on the ground will control and suppress weeds in the flower bed without the need for weed control membranes. Though this membrane will no doubt help to stop weed growth, it is not rated as a weed barrier. What size should I buy? Although Non-Woven Weed Membrane has a lower tensile strength than the woven type, it still offers great strength, durability and excellent drainage properties. Non-woven weed membrane is a felt-like fabric made by thermally bonding polypropylene or a mixture of polypropylene and polyester fibres and then finishing using needle punching, calendaring and other methods. This type of fabric is easier to cut, has a high water permeability rate and does not lose strength over time, in the same way as the woven fabric does, when used below ground. This makes it ideal for use beneath driveways and roads and in land and storm water drainage systems, where long-term ground stabilisation and filtration is required.

It comes folded, instead of on a roll, which means it can’t just be pushed out to distribute it in the garden; however, as mentioned it’s not too unruly to control when the sheet is entirely opened out. Available Sizes: As this fabric is mainly used in large civil engineering applications we only sell this fabric in a jumbo roll 4.5m x 100m Ensure securing pegs are used when using under gravel. If not used, over time, the weed membrane can appear through gravel and look unsightly.

Thanks to its density, it’s easy to lay and spread without the sheet acting up and blowing around, plus it can be covered with various material such as sand, gravel and bark without damaging the surface of the fabric. The first decision is whether to get a woven or non-woven weed membrane. Choose woven weed membranes (such as Polypropylene) for driveways, paths, and when laying slate or gravel. This material is strong, durable, and puncture-resistant. Ideally, look for fabric around 125 g/m² as this can handle heavy footfall. The following steps will help you lay the weed control fabric correctly, to most effectively combat against weeds. Available Sizes: Large selection of rolls that come in widths of 1m, 1.5m, 2.0m, 3.3m, 4.2m, 4.5m and 5.0m wide.
