About this deal

There is at least one other CN thread about these bins, but to my knowledge, only one person (Claudio) owned the 15x60 Docters, and his report was about its daylight performance, because he had trouble mounting the bins on a tripod (they require a special Docter adapter, same one my CZJ 8x50 Octarem takes). The series consists of just two 60mm offerings, which if you imagine them as windows are able to capture more light than smaller ones, which leads to a better quality and brighter image. But at the me time they are not so large as to make the overall dimensions and weight of the binocular to great, which would require you having to use a tripod all the time.

From my experience with my porro Swarovski Habichts, I am aware that an older style porro with good design combined with more up to date coatings can be a stunning and almost timeless instrument. Does this apply similarly to this Zeiss? One last thought: Having used the Zeiss with its mechanical stabilizer quite a bit, I find it almost impossible to use one of the stabilized Canons anymore. The Zeiss has such a nice, "quiet" and steady image, that I find the quirks introduced by the electronic stabilizer of the Canons highly distracting. So, if someone's thinking about getting a Canon, don't try out the Zeiss ... The one problem I have with the 20x60S is that to me it's neither fish nor flesh. The magnification isn't enough to replace a scope in the field, and it's too high for watching passerines. What I'd really like to see is a 10x or 12x Zeiss with a stabilizer, not heavier than, say, 1000gr. That would kill *every* other 10x binocular in the field. For an idea about the quality of the Docter Nobilem line, see Holger's review of the 10x50 model, which he compares to the 10x50 Fuji: I've done various searches on the Internet and done my reading and now I'm intrigued with this particular Zeiss. I don't usually buy a Bino with a view to selling it (I've never sold one actually...would rather just give it to a loved one etc)...so I now realise that I also enjoy the slow process of collecting nice bins.

It's a bright and hazy day..some bushfires about so not ideal for viewing. What I did do was to clean the eyepieces. There was eye lash oil in spades. Everything seems to be virtually pristine otherwise. The lenses are stunning to behold once cleaned. The occulars were perfect. Collimation perfect...thank goodness. This really is a special instrument.

Zeiss Karoly Györ was a small factory located in Györ, a country in northern Hungary, which produced optics and precision instruments, exclusively for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Unfortunately, raw seafood around where I live in Texas in considered similar to toxic waste so, I need to travel far to eat REAL SUSHI instead of a vegetable roll with soy sauce and fake Wasabi. Another really interesting model is the 16x70 Polaris, which has obviously been designed specifically with long distance terrestrial and astronomy use in mind. Indeed they have been designed to ensure eyepiece filters can easily be attached which are commonly used in astronomy. The Fuji Optical Devices Division is actually located in the US, in Wayne, NJ and they provide the Fujinon binoculars as well as other Fujinon optical lenses and I believe they also have some production workshops in Japan and China.
