About this deal

The imperial pound was first defined in terms of the metric unit by The UK Weights and Measures Act of 1878 which defined 1 lb = 453.59237 grams. The kilogram or kilogramme, (symbol: kg) is the SI base unit of mass. A gram is defined as one thousandth of a kilogram. Conversion of units describes equivalent units of mass in other systems.

Like Kilogram or kg, the pound (lb) and gram (gm) are both used for the measurement of mass. Given below are the detailed history and description of the two units of mass along with their conversions from one to the other.

Exchanging old notes

Please note that in our ham cooking time calculator, we use an equation based on the average number of minutes it takes for a pound of a certain kind of meat to cook. This time is usually within a range of about five minutes, so, in reality, small variations from your calculated result may occur. Naturally, if you're a professional cook/food scientist and have access to technology allowing you to time your cooking to the fraction of a second - we encourage you to go for it! We can't help but wonder what's a professional like you doing here, though 😉

In 1960, with the selection of the S.I base units which replaced the MKS System, the fundamental unit of mass was selected to be a kilogram. about 2.205 pounds. Since there are exactly 0.45359237 kg/lb, we can convert between these units with more accuracy as follows:

Scientific applications use the pound to describe mass, whilst everyday use sees it as a measure of weight. Despite broad acceptance of the metric system of weights and measures, the pound continues to be used in English-speaking countries. The earliest units to be discovered was the gram. The limitation of the gram lay in the fact that most items weighed more than a gram. And a centimeter wasn’t really a unit of mass. In 1795 king Louis XII commissioned various scientists to look into something that could be standard.

Since 1 kilogram equals 2.205 pounds we can write this as an equation and create a conversion ratio. Kilogram is the SI unit of mass. Mass is defined as the tendency of objects at rest to remain so unless acted upon by a force. Kilogram came from the French word kilogrammes. It was incorporated into the French law in the decree of 18 germinal of 1795. In the United Kingdom, its use began in early 1797. The United States along with the other countries of Commonwealth of Nations together agreed to the definitions of yard and pound and also adopted them in the year 1959. Five pounds seems like an easy way to estimate how much something weighs and does not seem like that much weight. Five pounds, in other units of measurement, is equivalent to about: 2.3 kilograms, 80 ounces, or .4 stones.

The name pound is an adaptation of the Latin phrase libra pondo, or a pound weight, the Roman libra (hence the symbol lb) weighed approximately 329 grammes.
