There doesn’t seem to be a way to control where this ebonizing technique is applied to the bowl. The entire bowl will be affected and that may or may not be what you’d like.

After the final coat of stain has dried and you are happy with the color, you can seal it to complete the task. If you prefer your stained wood to look glossy and fresh for longer, applying a coat of non-yellowing sealant will help. Wood conditioner or pre-stain is like lotion for your wood, evening out the dry spots and allowing the stain to then absorb evenly. You want to use Speedball India Ink not just because your wood turned bowl is a piece of art, but also because of the inks formulation. Let the pre-stain conditioner sit on for the recommended time before moving on to the next step. And you can apply it using a lint-free cloth or as directed on the product label. Step 5: Apply the stainThe longer you leave the excess on the surface to soak in the deeper/richer the colour will appear. We therefore recommend removing it after only a minute or two and if it dries too light, you can apply another coat. However, if you apply too much and it dries too dark, it is much harder to sand, strip and then re-stain the wood! The stain works beautifully, but you do need to have nice long strokes for large areas to get a smooth streak-free finish. You also have to let it cure before using or it may chip off. Up to 3 weeks. This may be hard if you use the table. Ammonia can alter the wood surface but is dangerous and more complicated to set up and prepare than the iron acetate technique. A small amount of ink goes a long way. Pour out a small amount at first and see how far it spreads before pouring a more substantial amount.

It’s important to start with clean, sanded wood. Wood straight from the store can have a slight coating on it, so be sure to lightly sand to expose the fresh wood underneath.

You don’t want the wood stain spilling on the floor or ground beneath. Neither do you want to have the sanding dust spreading all over the place; it can mean a lot of cleaning work after completing the task. And the most difficult ebonized bowl to sign with a wood-burning tool is fire treated ebonized bowls. Only a subtle groove is etched into the wood with the pen since the wood is already burnt. Use a quality brush or sprayer: The tool you use to apply the topcoat can make a significant difference in the final outcome. Choose a brush or sprayer suitable for the finish you’re using.
