Bloodborne [b] is a 2015 action role-playing game developed by FromSoftware and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 4. Bloodborne follows the player's character, a Hunter, through the decrepit Gothic, Victorian-era–inspired city of Yharnam, whose inhabitants are afflicted with a blood-borne disease which transforms the residents, called Yharnamites, into horrific beasts. Attempting to find the source of the plague, the player's character unravels the city's mysteries while fighting beasts and cosmic beings. Ramsay, Randolph (June 10, 2014). The official synopsis for the first run reveals the comic follows a nameless Hunter: Bloodborne was released in March 2015 and received critical acclaim, with praise directed at its gameplay, particularly its high difficulty level, atmosphere, sound design, Lovecraftian themes, and interconnected world design. Some criticism was directed at its technical performance at launch, which was improved with post-release updates. An expansion adding additional content, The Old Hunters, was released in November 2015. By the end of 2015, the game had sold over two million copies worldwide. Bloodborne won several awards and has been cited as a masterpiece, and is considered to be one of the greatest video games ever made. Some related media and adaptations have also been released, including a card game, board game and comic book series.

The game's Victorian Gothic setting was partly inspired by the novel Dracula, [46] and the architecture of locations in Romania and the Czech Republic. [47] Miyazaki also enjoyed H. P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos series of surreal horror stories, and applied similar themes into the game. [48] Miyazaki had wanted to create a game set in such an era as those novels, but he wanted everything to be as detailed as possible, and felt that such a game was only possible on eighth generation hardware. This need for high-end hardware, and the fact that the PlayStation 4 was presented to the company first, was the reason the game was a PS4 exclusive, rather than a cross-generation release. [49] The developers' target frame rate for the title was 30 frames per second, due to their design choices made for the title. [46] Van Daal, Joel (April 15, 2015). [ permanent dead link] Kot’s non- Bloodborne comics work might seem radically different than a video game tie-in, but the themes explored in Bloodborne aren’t too different from those in their creator-owned or superhero universe books. The oppressive rule of the Healing Church isn’t too different from the sci-fi dystopia of The New World or the future spy drama of Days of Hate.Cook, Dave (May 30, 2014). Aleš has a very specific vision of the comic he is creating. His scripts are more than just simple descriptions of the scenes,” said Kowalski, who draws Bloodborne. [Editor’s note: Kot uses he/him and they/them pronouns. ] “He tries to convey the drama, the emotion, the movement, the atmosphere. I find this kind of approach immensely helpful, and to be quite honest, truly refreshing. I love working with writers who have a very clear vision of the tale they are telling, their energy and their passion are contagious. Aleš is that kind of a writer.” It was important to Kot that their version of Bloodborne be true to their interpretation of the series, without necessarily being binding canon for every player of the game. “The Hunter in Bloodborne is explicitly non-binary to me,” Kot explained. “As for the narrative of the story itself … what people make of the scenes that imply certain possibilities is ultimately up to them. I didn’t write the characters or scenes with a definitive take on what other people should think or believe, but I know the places I wrote them from.” Makuch, Eddie (March 30, 2015).
