About this deal

Games that can accommodate both two players and many players are ideal. While family-friendly games may be designed for more players so all the kids can get involved, many board games for adults are meant to be fun and competitive with as few as two players. Of course, there are party-style games that are great for a crowd, but if it’s just you and a friend playing, choose one of the options built to challenge groups of two. Our favorite two-player game, Patchwork, is perfect for date night, while What Do You Meme? can accommodate up to 20 players. Get everyone thinking with puzzle and trivia games, featuring the likes of Trivia Pursuit and brain teasers to keep the whole family engaged. The challenge comes from some clever optical illusions. Icons are jumbled up, resized and just generally hard to identify at speed on the circular cards – so you can spend ages staring at them thinking there’s no match to be seen. Then you spot it with a whoop of joy and scrabble to claim the point before anyone else.

It should be noted, although these games are intended for adults, none of them are NSFW (not suitable for work), so they shouldn’t spark any inappropriate moments or awkward questions from the kids.

Ticket to Ride

How it works: Your aim here is simple - make it out of the mansion alive after completing one of 50 missions. That isn't to say it's predictable, though. Betrayal isn't set up like traditional board games, and that's part of its appeal. Your character has been drawn to the house for mysterious reasons (they're following a friend who's gone missing or received an invitation from parties unknown, for example), and it's revealed turn by turn as you try to solve that case. However, each room is selected at random when you enter it. The items or events encountered within are randomized as well. In other words? There's no way of telling what lurks behind those doors. You can organize board games alphabetically, according to age group (kids, adults, whole family), according to the size of the box they come in, by color, or anything else that makes sense to you. You can organize board games in closed storage like a credenza or a closet, or horizontally or vertically on open shelving. Just be sure to keep them where they are easy to access and put away for everyone who wants to play. While some people like organizing board games in plastic tubs, or emptying pieces into plastic baggies, there’s really no need to load up on all that plastic when they already come in a cardboard storage box. If you ask us, that intricacy makes Villainous better when played head-to-head. While duking it out with lots of other people is fun, reducing the head-count makes things less chaotic and gives you more time to strategize. It's a great choice in terms of must-have board games for 2 players. Ragnarök is coming! The end of the world is nigh and it is your job to steer your Viking clan through battles to secure your place in eternal Valhalla. As you’d expect, there’s more than a smattering of pillaging, warfare and cunning tactics as you upgrade and develop your clan, and as the game moves through its three phases, you’ll receive help from mythical Norse creatures and fight other players for precious tokens.

Powered by unique combat and a setting that's reminiscent of The Witcher, Gloomhaven is the fantasy adventure of your dreams. Branching storylines and a kingdom influenced by your decisions produce a quest you can lose yourself in for months. At the beginning of the game, players close their eyes, allowing the fascists to reveal themselves to one another. Meanwhile, Secret Hitler keeps his eyes closed, but puts his thumbs up so his fascists know where he is. The entire game then starts to feel like that basement scene from Inglourious Basterds, except instead of everyone getting shot at the end, you get to call your friends fascists.

There are a couple of answers to this question, and the one you get depends on your criteria. If we're talking about the #1 board game in terms of sales, it would have to be chess. This old-timer shifts roughly 3 million units each and every year, eclipsing almost everything else on shelves. Others may prefer something simpler like Betrayal at House on the Hill, though. That sort of 'hobby' board game is very replayable, and gets better every time as you learn its quirks. What is the most popular board game in 2023? What you need to know: The odds are against you from the start in Pandemic, but that's the beauty of it. This co-op epic is never less than thrilling, and it doesn't feel hopeless either. Despite being tasked with curing a clutch of super-diseases, good communication (not to mention the ability to think on your feet) will see you through. Want satisfying cooperative board games for your collection? This should be at the top of the pile.
