So this is my first Cutty Sark! This blend was created in 1923 for Berry Bros. & Rudd, and was the first very pale-coloured whisky in the world. Named after a famous Scottish-built clipper ship, the standard blend uses around 20 malts, including Glenrothes and Macallan. During her time as a clipper, the ship made eight voyages from China to London. The bottle is charmingly dark, obscure, and bootleg-able-looking. The reviewed bottle has been open for 3 days. This is a “small batch” blend of the finest single malts and top-quality grain whiskies. Hand-selected American Sherry oak casks give subtle signature flavours of vanilla and spice, whilst the overall flavours and finish are extremely smooth and thrillingly complex. To wrap this in a nice outro before I set sail on this review, remember: Always be passionate in your palate, stay true to your tastes and proud of whatever whisky floats your boat. On the nose: salted caramel fudge matched with some light shiny grain notes. A hearty mix combined with the aroma of cardboard recycling out in the rain. A couple of drops of water seems to increase the ethanol notes, giving a pleasant pepper spice. Even in times of restrictive upheaval, new business opportunities emerge. As it is now, when whisky clubs and producers have seized their captive audience and sent out more Zoom invites than any single liver could cope with. As it was then, when the 1920-1933 prohibition of alcohol in the United States destroyed some brands but opened the door for others. Cutty Sark was a new brand created in 1923 so it was considered less likely to be counterfeited than the established likes of Johnnie Walker and Chivas Regal. The story goes that it benefitted from the seal of approval of its importer Bill ‘Real’ McCoy. This enabled the brand to grow even while it was prohibited. The name ‘Cutty Sark’ comes from an archaic Scottish term for a short shirt of nightdress. It is what Nannie the witch wore in the poem Tam O’ Shanter by Robert Burns. Cutty Sark the Tea Clipper

The drawing of the ship which appears on the bottle was drawn by Swedish artist Cael Georg August Wallin and has appeared on the bottle since 1955. He was a marine painter, and it was his most famous work. At any rate, Cutty Prohibition is bottled at the robust (and unusual, for a blend) strength of 50% ABV, and supposedly has a different blend of grains and malts than the typical Cutty Sark bottle. Some of the components were aged in “American Sherry” barrels, otherwise known as ex-bourbon casks that temporarily held sherry, a practice known as “seasoning”. That’s all we know, because large scotch companies are even less forthcoming about their blends than they are about their single malts.

Cutty Sark Prohibition was released to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the repeal of prohibition and the failure of the Noble Experiment. Bottled at a higher proof than the regular Cutty Sark, and supposedly from a different mixture of single malts and grains, it has a noticeably different profile from its more mainstream companion. The Prohibition – the so-called Noble Experiment – was repealed in 1933. This Cutty Sark was released exactly 80 years after that repeal, in 2013. Cutty Sark was one of the few whisky’s that you could actually enjoy – illicitly of course – in the so-called speak easy clubs. This Cutty Sark is bottled at a higher alcohol strengt hand matured completely on American oak. Balance: A smooth, not unpleasant whisky. Not sure I would buy it because I would likely not choose it over the others in my cabinet. But definitely one of the better blends I’ve tried. 22 As this whisky opened the balance get better but it is still too sweet for me, but it will charmed those with a sweet tooth. The heavy notes are splendid, the malt is lighter than the Glengoyne 10 and doesn't play with a bitter note like the Glen, but the fruits are more opened specially with air. The finish is all on the sugar with a little fire of alcohol that brings some spices.
