About this deal

I don’t think I consciously set out to sidestep any traditions or tropes. These are just two characters that I fell in love with and felt compelled to write. I’ve always enjoyed writing from an outsider’s point of view and Norton is the ultimate outsider. And in Fred there is a chance to create a richly layered character who has a complicated relationship with his own faith. Psychologically, there is a lot to work with in both characters for both Andrea and I and their stories drive the narrative, rather than creating a high-concept horror story and having the characters simply be there to react to things.

Gideon is Hebrew for “destroyer” or “feller of trees”, which is fitting considering his arch-nemeses are the Pines family and one of the villains of the show. We (well, at least I) only care about a mystery if we first care about the people the mystery is happening to. This means more than surface-level characterization. In Gideon Falls, we don't get more than that. There are essentially two main characters, Norton, a man diagnosed with something akin to schizophrenia (it's never stated what his supposed mental illness is), whose entire character is "crazy guy who might be right", and Father Wilfred, a man whose entire character is "priest who had something undefined but bad happen to him, maybe." Both of these paper thin characters drift along, solving the mystery because it is there to be solved, revealing nothing about their deeper personas or what drives them or what is important to them along the way. They don't seem to want anything besides Solving The Mystery, which means anytime we see them the only thing we want them to do is discover some new clue. Which, for a story written like that, are too few and far between. If you're in a movie, and if someone is pleading with you, swearing, and if that person is pretty normal most of the time, then I think it's worth your time to say, "Well, if you believe it this much, that's enough for me to give you a couple hours of my time." Gideon Falls is finally coming together and it was totally worth the wait. It set a high bar of terror from the beginning and it continues to surpass that with each chapter. That's an impressive feat 25 issues in. As we approach the grand finale, I cannot wait to see what is in store for us, especially if this chapter is any indication. Grades: We are in Harrow County, Rachel Rising and Outcast territory with Jeff Lemire, Andrea Sorrentino and Dave Stewarts's entry into the comics horror world. And like those other series (and many more we could name), we have a fight going for the soul of the town, an epic battle between Heaven and Hell. The central feature that distinguishes this from the others is not actually the great art, because all of the above series are exemplary in that category, but Sorrentino's art is indeed great, amazingly inventive with paneling and layouts. The team here is trying to capture a sense of madness, and evil, and Sorrentino does that through some of the most amazing visuals you will see out there.Which brings us to Gideon Falls. There appear to be two main characters. Father Wilfred is newly appointed to the local Catholic Church. It's implied that his predecessor died, or at least disappeared, but we're never told the exact circumstances, and it eventually becomes clear that Wilfred’s superior may know more about the situation than he’s letting on. The city and rural polarity is working in multiple ways,” says Lemire. “First, in terms of pure aesthetics, the book contrasts the wide-open spaces and natural world of the small town with the dense and dirty world the big city.”

the rest of the art is decent, except for the characters themselves who look like they've had some weird blurry rotoscoping effect. it was a stylistic choice, but i don't like it. Awesome book with lots to love! If you’re a fan of horror and/or you like a strange story you should definitely go for this! I highly recommend this one and can’t wait for the next volume! Overall, Gideon Falls is the perfect testament to the combined talents of Lemire & Sorrentino's ongoing partnership. Be kind to yourself and bump this to the top of your to-read pile. It is a huge relief when things that you have been working on privately for quite a while go out into the world and people respond to it. Though I must confess I always know that I am in good hands with Andrea. His work is so good and so interesting and so unique that I felt confident we had something special here. McMillan, Graeme (28 June 2018). "Horror Comic Gideon Falls to Be Developed for TV by Hivemind (Exclusive)". Hollywood Reporter.

Alternate Universe: The two protagonists reside in these. The Pentoculus allows Bishop Burke to visit many other versions of Gideon Falls, including The Wild West, Steampunk, and Big Brother Is Watching versions. I move to a town where people say there's a Ghost Barn and a bunch of weird shit has happened and people see the Ghost Barn mysteriously appear and disappear. Reasonably, I'm skeptical, so a series of events must occur before I can get on board and get to the place where I'm like, "What are we going to do about this goddamn Ghost Bard?" In a city called Gideon Falls a boy is rummaging through trash at the same time a priest comes into town as the newly appointed father of the church. How are their lives connected? is there even a connection? To find out read this book beautifully crafted by Jeff Lemire (author), Andrea Sorrentino (Artist), Dave Stewart (Colorist) and Steve Wands (Letterer & Design) Salvatore, Brian; Grover, Rowan (27 June 2018). Viñeta interior de Gideon Falls: Vía Crucis Andrea Sorrentino deslumbra con una narrativa llena de recursos I feel like Lemire watched two of the crappiest, most overrated, yet absurdly popular, TV shows of recent years, Mr Robot and Stranger Things, and decided to do something derivative of them. The mental patient storyline seemed similar to the main character of Mr Robot’s while the small town sheriff/supernatural goings-on was very much in the Stranger Things vein. Even without those shows’ flavourings, neither storyline is interesting. I also didn’t care about any of the characters who weren’t at all likeable or compelling. The second thing that bothers me, I'm bored. When I know exactly what's happening and the characters don't, and when a significant portion of the plot regards the period between the characters noticing the fishy thing and then getting to the level of knowledge I am as a viewer, that's all boring time. Announced in 2017, Gideon Falls was billed as Jeff Lemire’s unique take on the horror genre, focused on exploring the idea of a source of evil versus relying on gore. The series received early accolades, winning best new series at the 2019 Eisner awards, with Dave Stewart winning best coloring the following year. In addition, the series is set to be developed into a TV show (though the current status is ‘in development’). This is one of the weirdest comics I’ve read in awhile. This might actually be even weirder than The Sandman but still manages to make sense so I love it. Father Fred is a troubled priest who has been assigned to a parish in the remote, rustic town of Gideon Falls, after the previous priest mysteriously disappeared. After he receives a vision of the priest, whose dead body is found soon after, Fred starts to investigate the mysteries of the town. the panelling, layout, framing, etc. is the best thing about this series. other graphic novels try to do something inventive with their layout but mainly just do different sized rectangles. this one really goes all out almost constantly.

It’s because of that sheer consistency that makes reviewing Gideon Falls difficult at times. For the sake of the review, I can’t come here every time and tell you the same things, but Lemire/Sorrentino have delivered on every single issue of this book. This is consistent greatness from two of the absolute best storytellers in this industry. It’s that simple. The art is fantastic! Sorrentino’s gritty style suits this book perfectly! It sorta reminds me of a mix of Azaceta and Sean Phillips which is something I say with the highest compliments. An amazing artist!

That said, it can appear a little slow regarding character development, but this does appear to be an intentional choice as the plot tends to rely on character reveals to maximize the impact of its twists and turns.
