About this deal

If you are one of the many people that struggle when walking your dog on a regular leash or harness, you may already have considered trying a head collar. Understanding how to use a Halti head collar is essential for a rewarding and stress-free walk for both you and your dog. Why use a Halti head collar? Practice this a few times inside, then take it to the yard and repeat the game. Remember to mark the moment that she’s doing what you want her to (standing near your hip with a nice loose leash) and reward her. She should be walking beautifully with you in the yard before you take it to the street, so that she’s had plenty of practice walking nicely on the Halti. One of the major reasons the trainer recommended a headcollar to me all those years ago was due to my dog’s over-the-top reactivity towards other dogs. My boy had a tendency to fixate on other nearby dogs and then launch into a frenzy of barking and lunging. As a small person, having a dog the size of me dragging me, teeth first, to the nearest training team, was not a good situation. Unfortunately, this often becomes a battle between you and your dog. Despite what you may think, your dog does not understand that it is doing anything wrong. They just want to get to the next lamppost for a sniff or turn the corner to reach the park. Dogs who are trained to accept new or different situations or equipment will learn much faster. What’s more, they will be more relaxed than if you try to force them into something.

The Halti is designed to fit ‘snugly’ on your dog. However, it is only ever designed to be used during walks. If you have a puppy pulling on a leash, our Halti Training range can help! We recommend that walking-on-the-lead training is only done for a short period each day, and within the overall scope of your puppy’s recommended daily exercise allowance. It is important to note that lead walk training should only be a part of your puppy’s daily exercise which should also include a wide range of activities to aid mental stimulation and early socialisation. A common guideline for estimating a daily exercise level for your puppy is 5 minutes of exercise per month of age, twice a day. So for example, a 5-month-old puppy could have 2 x 25-minute walks daily. However, you should consult with your vet on the appropriate number of minutes per day as a puppy’s breed and development stage will also play a role in the overall exercise time. Some dog owners report that their dog stops pulling when wearing the Halti head harness. However, these dogs won’t stop pulling when wearing a normal leash. So, ultimately, this product is no replacement for proper heel training. How is a Halti Different to a Body Harness? Ultimately, the least cruel way to stop your dog from pulling is to use positive reinforcement training to teach them to heel.

The point of this exercise is that you want her to know what she should be doing, rather than just being corrected all the time when she walks to the end of the leash. It’s normal for a dog to paw at the head collar when it first starts wearing one. Encouraging your dog to walk on and rewarding them when they do so is the best way to stop it until your dog gets used to wearing it. Top tips for using a head collar Think of it a little like wearing a pair of glasses for the first time. You tend to look at the bridge of your nose rather than through the lenses. The feeling of something on our nose can also be distracting. So be patient with your dog.
