About this deal

There are other comments to be made regarding the themes of the first half, but I intended to make a shorter review. The author, not showing the past life of Sudo, obliges the reader to have a unique interpretation of this character: colleague of Gosho, a very polite, sensitive, with common sense, respectful, and understanding person … the embodiment of perfection. So impeccable in his behavior that he doesn’t seem real. And it is precisely here that the author shows his genius. In fact, the character who apparently seems the most “normal” of the whole work turns out to be the most surreal. In Happiness, Sudo represents the idea of unconditional, absolute love.

just not the target audience for romance novels, but I can admit the following story was well put-together and had more than a few pleasant moments until the ending. Happiness 5". Penguin Random House. Archived from the original on 20 June 2017 . Retrieved 4 June 2017. Vampire Vannabe: A whole cult of them, the Blood of Happiness. They don't seem all that bad as cults go, partly because they already have a docile vampire sitting in the basement. Their weirdest practice is holding bloodletting masses. It's only their leader who's a genuine monster, and unfortunately they are fanatically devoted to him.Happiness 8". Penguin Random House. Archived from the original on 13 September 2018 . Retrieved 5 December 2018. Like individually the characters are fine... I suppose. Like in the second half the fleshing out of characters happens quite naturally in a slice of life setting, and yet the time skip and shift in character focus just isn't enjoyable to read. More than that it also takes a while to ramp into the vampire stuff again. And once it does, it's just a clown fiesta that's unexplainable. Boy Meets Ghoul: After a while, it's clear Nora chose to turn Makoto rather than kill him because she wants some company. A manga from Shuzo Oshimi, creator of The Flowers of Evil and Inside Mari, which ran in Bessatsu Shonen Magazine from 2015 to 2019.

I’m recovering from post-series depression because the characters are so likable and relatable! This is because of their humanity (or escaping humanity), which is done justice by the beautiful and experimental art style, and the subtlety of displayed emotions by the characters. Alas i was wrong. This manga is a masterpiece. From the characters, to the story, adn at some cases even the drawing. The Drifter: The vampires in Happiness are homeless drifters, never staying in one place for too long. I had read the authors two previus works, aku no hana and mari. While aku no hana ranked as mediocrite to me, mari ranked better in my opinion. Happiness (6)] (in Japanese). Kodansha. Archived from the original on 7 November 2017 . Retrieved 5 November 2017.

As a result, the subtext of the work weakens and the author focuses his efforts on creating interesting situations focused on suspense. So how did he do in this transition process? Even if the rest of Miyagi's life is valued at a low price, it's admitted in the story that subjective happiness plays no role in deciding a lifespan's value, and instead its worth is decided by objective wealth and influence. Wasn't another message that this book tries to send is that personal happiness is more important than any fame or fortune, demonstrated when Kusunoki says, "and more than the meaningful thirty days I should have spent, these last three days will be the most precious of them all."? Near-Death Experience: A slashed throat induces one in Gosho; she sees her little brother, who sadly tells her it's not time to see her yet. The character wakes up to discover the building is on fire, but is galvanised to survive.

Returning to the final chapter of Happiness, the events that lead Nora to become a vampire are narrated in it. Several centuries ago, in a rural village in Japan, Nora lived a happy and peaceful life with her family, and like many young women, she had also found love (a boy who is identical to Okazaki). Unfortunately, this idyll has a short duration. In fact, Nora is chosen by her community as a sacrificial victim to offer to the vampire kept segregated in a cave outside the village. Having become a vampire in turn, the young girl is forced to abandon her family, her lover, and with them her happiness. Happiness 1". Penguin Random House. Archived from the original on 30 September 2016 . Retrieved 16 September 2016.However, one should not overlook how Nora is represented by Oshimi. A teenage girl, mysterious, charming, beautiful and cursed. A mermaid, or rather a succubus, that bewitches Okazaki to follow her on her surreal journey, taking him further and further away from his affections, from Gosho, from reality. And if Yukiko Gosho represents maternal love, it comes by itself as Nora instead represents mad love, the femme fatale. Another similarity of this Flaubertian duality, which further enhances the conceptual closeness between Happiness and Aku no hana.

Can a “monster” like Sakurane experience a feeling like happiness? Oshimi‘s answer is quite clear: yes, he can. Although Sakurane has spent a lifetime in contempt and hatred of others, despite having never experienced feelings like love, friendship or maternal affection, he is the one who has come closest to absolute happiness. In fact, just before taking his last breath, Sakurane reaches his goal, to become a vampire. Even if it only lasts a moment, in that very short period of time between Okazaki’s bite and his beheading, Sakurane is truly happy. Yes, even “monsters” can be happy. Happiness (2)] (in Japanese). Kodansha. Archived from the original on 29 August 2016 . Retrieved 21 May 2016.As a single novel, this is a rewarding read. Although it’s one of author Sugaru Miaki’s first works, it reads well and I’d certainly like to see the stories Miaki wrote after this localised in the future. The only real criticism I could give it is that the supernatural element of selling your life isn’t explored quite as much as it could be, but that’s a fairly minor issue.
