(See section 4.4 'Special warnings and precautions for use') Adults and children over 12 years: Take one sachet in the morning and one in the evening, preferably after meals. Children aged under six years (only on the advice of a doctor): Half to one level 5ml spoonful of granules (depending on child's size and age) dissolved in a glass of water after breakfast and evening meals. If abdominal pain occurs or in cases of any irregularity of faeces, the use of psyllium seed should be discontinued and medical advice must be sought. Often, increasing the amount of fibre (bran) in your diet and drinking plenty of water each day can effectively prevent or relieve constipation. You will have been recommended ispaghula husk to help relieve constipation if you cannot increase the amount of fibre in your diet, or if this is insufficient. Ispaghula husk, a laxative, works by increasing the bulk of your stools, which encourages your bowels to move the stools through your digestive system, in turn relieving constipation.

Adults and children aged 13 years and over: One sachet dissolved in a glass of water twice a day, after breakfast and evening meals.

You may wish to include some foods in your diet that contain sorbitol. Sorbitol is a naturally occurring sugar. Fruits (and their juices) that have a high sorbitol content include apples, apricots, gooseberries, grapes (and raisins), peaches, pears, plums, prunes, raspberries and strawberries. Drinks containing caffeine (tea, coffee, colas) or alcohol can make constipation worse as they have a diuretic effect. This means they cause a loss of fluid from your body, which causes dehydration and makes your stools hard and dry. It is best to reduce the number of caffeinated or alcoholic drinks that you have, or avoid them altogether. Fybogel and fertility

Most people will only need to take Fybogel for a few days at a time. But if you need to take it for many months, for example to increase the fibre in your diet, it can cause an electrolyte imbalance. This is where levels of substances like sodium, potassium and magnesium in your body get too high or too low. A severe electrolyte imbalance can cause serious health problems, such as muscle spasm and twitching, and or even cause a seizure or fit. Other side effects Medicines and their possible side effects can affect people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that may be associated with Fybogel. Just because a side effect is stated here doesn't mean that all people taking Fybogel will experience that or any side effect.
