About this deal

Following on from A Wedding in the Country where three young women, Lizzie, Alexandra and Meg, meet on a cookery course and become firm friends, A Wedding in Provence is Alexandra’s story. A chance meeting in Paris leads to her being employed as a nanny to three French children who live in a chateau in Provence. Their father is absent a lot of the time, and their mother left many years before, so they present her with a bit of a challenge to say the least. However, Alexandra is a capable and resourceful young woman and, despite disapproval from almost everyone she meets, gradually gains the children’s trust. Her relationship with them is the main focus of the story, with the romance almost taking second place. Waiting for her inside is three silent, rather hostile children who are to be her charges for the next month.

Marrying her husband Desmond Fforde, the cousin of famous writer Jasper Fforde, in 1972, she then had three children; Briony, Francis and Guy. It was only after her third child was born that she begun her career as a writer, whilst using her married name to write under. Living in Stroud in Gloucestershire, she takes an active part in the local community where she sings in the choir there, whilst undertaking a variety of other activities. It’s 1963 and free-spirited heiress Alexandra has 24 hours in Paris before jumping on a train bound for finishing school in Switzerland. She bumps into Donna outside the Sacré Coeur, and there begins a chain of events that leads her to gaining employment from the handsome Le Comte de Belleville. He has ‘dark eyes fringed with long lashes’ and a ‘mouth that curled at the corners’. It comes as no surprise that she finds him ‘almost impossible not to fall in love with’. Featuring the story of thirty-five year old Polly Cameron, it tells of how she’s not looking for a relationship with a strong and independent mindset. Seemingly happy with life whilst somewhat world-weary, she’s keen to do things on her own whilst not needing others for company in the process. Residing in a small Gloucestershire town not unlike that of the author, she has her cat for company whilst taking an active part in her local community whilst working at a cafe. This all leads to both her family and friends attempting to set her up with various men in a number of different and increasingly elaborate ways, all efforts which she constantly attempts to fend off. Not wanting to complicate her life anymore, she wants to keep herself busy without relying on others for any help or assistance, instead doing things alone. That’s when a man enters her life to help her reevaluate things and maybe change her mind on what she previously thought to be the case. Will she change her mind and manage to settle down? Can she ever truly be happy? What will become of Polly Cameron as she finds herself living dangerously? A French Affair

A Wedding in Provence by Katie Fforde – eBook Details

This bohemian story rolls along energetically, hardly pausing for breath, a cast of colourful characters gathering in the chateau as the story builds.Set in the early sixties, A Wedding in Provence transports the reader to a world of social nuances and niceties that bring the era alive. Véronique and Lucinda in particular embody French chic and disdain so vividly that they frequently enraged me. It also left me feeling a little uncomfortable when Alexandra was assessing men for their suitability as suiters and that she should prefer this one instead of that one because her's closer in age, Perhaps it was something that women did in the sixties? Look at men as potential husbands? However, we do get to enjoy the development of the relationship between the young nanny and her charges, as they go from wary to not wanting her to ever go.

The children's father - a count and very handsome often works away and Alexandra is left to cope with this alone.I absolutely loved the story and the way it was told, and was totally invested in the family. I'd love to know what happens next.' British author of romance novels, Katie Fforde is well known for her contemporary and ever appealing style of fiction. Easily accessible as it is textured, she has managed to amass herself a sizable audience throughout the many years of her career. With both commercial and critical success, she continues to attract audiences to her unique and distinctive works. Early and Personal Life I'd absolutely recommend this book to anyone and everyone, whether you're a romance lover or not, read Katie's books.' Far more of a challenge though is their father - an impossibly good looking French count with whom she is rapidly falling in love . . . They will soon be more friendly, she tells herself. All they need is some fun, good food and an English education.
