There is another distinction between so-called “old laid” and “modern laid” papers. From the 12th century onwards, the chain lines of a paper mold were attached directly to the wooden ribs of the frame itself. As the fiber moves, localized areas of higher and lower density are produced in a laydown pattern, and the pattern is also created on the surface of the paper. The fiber is most important. Different types of wood pulp, cellulose, and cotton behave differently when made into paper. In both traditions, the laid structure in the paper forms because the fibers from the pulp that collect on the mould sink into the small spaces between the wire or bamboo, leaving fewer fibers on the protruding parts of the mould. This makes the paper a bit thinner in these elevated areas. Laid paper is a type of paper that exhibits parallel lines, almost resembling a watermark, that run in either the horizontal, or vertical direction. The lines arise due to the wire mesh over which the paper pulp is laid as the paper is being pressed and dried.
